Hello all! I'm slowly continuing work on my 1964 Ford Fairlane Ranch Wagon as work and family allow. I'm looking for advice on replacing both the upper control arms and the coil springs. The control arms have rusted through and the springs snapped near the bottom. I have not been able to find any factory replacements for the control arms online. They appear to be the stamped steel variety where the coil spring sits directly on them. I've attached an image of the damaged control arm and spring. Most control arms for sale online appear to have a spring saddle of some kind. Regarding the springs, I found replacements on https://www.eatondetroitspring.com/ however they are pretty pricey; $260.10 with shipping; just the springs! I'm leaning towards a kit such as this one: Ebay Kit for 1965-1966 Mustang at $399.95 My first concern is that the control arms will not fit my Fairlane. My second concern is that the ride height will be awful (too high OR too low). I'm looking for any and all advice! Thanks so much in advance, this site has always been very helpful. Rockauto lists front springs for your car with the 260 for $80. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1021866&cc=1333909&jsn=529 No clue what interchanges between platforms on the control arms.
I think most guys just replace the whole front end with a Mustang II setup and get rack and pinion steering in the process. Lots of variations available. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/sear...tang 2 suspension kits&utm_content=Suspension
Tom You better check around for the part number for the 64 Fairlane UCA. I saw a picture of a rusty NOS one on eBay and it did not look like the 65 Mustang/Falcon part. The shaft for the Mustang/Falcon part is straight. The shaft in the Fairline part is curved. I doubt the parts will interchange. You might call Green Sales Company (800-543-4959) and see if they have the arms. If not, they might have new shafts and ball joints...a whole new UCA is much easier to replace, though. Your old UCA looks pretty crusty but if that is all surface rust and dirt, you might get away with a new shaft and ball joint. There used to be a Fairlane Club of America. You might look into that. If you hook up with them, that might help with parts and advice. A Mustang II conversion is pricey. I've had Falcons with MII and stock front ends. I saw no improvement with the MII over a good stock front end. Worn stock parts will give you pretty sloppy steering but nothing that cannot be corrected.
There's a NOS left hand UCA on eBay for $239. Part number C2OZ-3083-B. I checked that part number at Green Sales Company and they do not have the part in stock.
