    I think the derby promoters should start to put an age limit on the competing cars so that no more classics get destroyed (my opinion only). I've always been a fan of these clamshell wagons and I fear that some day they will have all been derbied away!

    Yeah, heard about that. For the clamshells anyway it's almost too late. Same for the big mid 70's Fords. There should be a lot more of those around than there are......

    When a whole bunch younger I considered doing this until I actually witnessed a dirt track "race" not even a full fleged derby and realized they all @%*&ing nuts. I NEVER would have contemplated spending the equivalent of a thousand or SEVERAL THOUSAND dollars with the express intention of wrecking it, even if amortized over a few derbies.
    The economy can't be that bad if there are folks doing this.
    Until us "enthusiasts" are outbidding the destroyers the supply will continue to dwindle. A case in point is the fellow who posted recently about the hearse with a crushed roof being auctioned. The guy LOVES the car but didn't spend the cake to buy it so maybe it turns up in a demo derby.

    Even as a kid, I always hated demolition derbies. I always felt sorry for the cars. I only actually attended only one derby and it was in Wilmington, OH in the early 1980's. By then, many of the guys were using the clamshell wagons in the derby. One fool entered a near mint 1959 Ford Custom sedan and the clamshells made short work of it. I never could see the sense in destroying a perfectly good old car like that.

    The sad part is that the mid 70s Fords are terrible in derbies. The rear end almost always drops down and ends up plowing the ground.

    around here the derbies are classed and the full size V8 class has banned the 70's cars for the most part. reason is, there are so few of them that when one enters its a ringer! because its up against the much smaller 80's and 90's wagons and sedans.

    i hate derby.....dont get me started!!!!:banghead3::banghead3:

    ....dont hate the game...hate the players....:)

    i got nothing against the Derbies...every auto sport has its death and destruction...

    up here...there was a guy that came from Washington state...every year with a 57/58/59 Fairlane/T bird/Edsel....he was a gawd!!!...he would kick everyones arse...including mine!....yup...i destroyed a few GM's in my time...but back then...they were as plentiful as Hondas are now(y)

    hey...i even cut the rear fender wells out of a mint 65 Falcon rag....how else was i gonna fit the M50/15's???....:biglaugh:

    we all did things that we aint proud of now....thats all:drink:
