Heck, I'm a legend in my own mind and beyond salvation according to many of the guys who've already answered, but I'm working on my second childhood and having a blast. I'm 63, going on 40.:biglaugh:

naaah, norm your a legend to some of us too!

i had an SSP car or two as a child. they made a smash up derby set in the 80's too. never had one but i remember the commercials.

i think that our nanny state has curtailed the whipcord cars...because parents are not responsible for what their children do these days.

i remember my grandfather letting me do stupid stuff with my toys....
he would look at my grandma and say "thats how he will learn alva".

My dad bought me a nice bunch of Tonka trucks and cranes back in the early 50's. I might have been 4 or 5 years old. I could ride those things! Built like a brick outhouse! Got knocked around, and bruised, and my fingers caught in the crane shovel, etc. but I never ran to mama, to bail me out. Just figured out how to get free of the pain. :biglaugh:

I can remember tossing them straight up seeing how close they would come on the way down!

Hard to find the old ones now. I'll betcha they fetch a mean dollar by collectors. I'm pretty sure they were made from old bumpers.:biglaugh: And like you, I've got the shins to prove it.:D

I loved those SSP cars.. I might still have one or two in boxes somewhere. And I know I still have my Tonka trucks, my kids are just learning how much fun they are.

I loved SSPs. Ihad a few of them, had the derby set but the cars were VW bugs. I'd buy them today if I could.

Me and my friend who lived across the street sold greeting cards door to door in the neighborhood to save up enough "points" to get the SST Derby set. He got the 57 Ford, and I got the blue Nomad wagon. I think we played with the cars a handful of times before all the various "break away" pieces (doors and hoods) were lost forever, then we lost interest. I think if I searched hard enough in my Mom's basement I might find a single black ramp used for launching the cars.
