Those of you who are church-goin' folk are familiar with the concept of 'grace'. Well, I had a big pile of earthly grace given to me this afternoon. I got a 'rush' assignment to drive over the mountains to Bend, Oregon to inspect a vehicle. Hurriedly jumped in the car and took off, with the wifey keeping me company. Stopped in town to fill up the tank and I realized I had left my wallet at home. No biggie - the wife's got me covered for money. Got over the hill and got the inspection done. Was headed down Hwy 20 between Bend and the town of Sisters when I got pulled over by a highway patrolman. Yes - I was speeding (aside here - Is there radar that pick you up while the law is moving in the opposite direction?) Anyway - The HP asks me for my license. "Uhhhh.....I left it at home this morning.." I give him my info and the car reg and insurance info. Tells me he clocked me at 72 in a 55. I wouldn't doubt it, but it was downhill....I told him my speed just got away from me on the downhill. (truth) Comes back after checking on my ID, and says he's letting me go with just a verbal warning.. Wow......I was floored........This is only the second time I've ever been let off from a ticket (not that I get that many, but I hsve been driving 42 years.......) Felt good..........
Yeah most radars work on reflective timing. the distance and milliseconds between pulse emissions. You were one lucky puppy, for sure. Oregon HPs are pretty good too.
Ohio Highway Patrol troopers don't let anybody slide. That guy probably didn't want the hassle of the extra paperwork becuse you didn't have your license, hmmm... there may be something to this? I lost my FOP card last summer doing 70 in a 45 in my GTO. I just tuned it and was testing it out, it didn't feel that fast? The best part is it was on my street and the cop sits in the same exact place running radar every day, three houses up in a gas pipeline access drive. They've had the radar for years that can determine your speed coming or going from a moving cop car, sits on the dash or somewhere behind the windshield, see the units in the back windows too. My brother in law is a cop, when he has to work night shift he sets the radar to high sensitivity then parks behind the high school and catches a few Z's. The unit goes off and wakes him up if anything approaches the car. My daughter is dating a rookie cop and my nephew just got on the force too. I'm surrounded, but I do have a good one-up on getting out of traffic tickets.
Now that you've learned your lesson....slow down! I'll bet the big reason you were only warned is the traffic was light and you didn't BS the guy, you simply told the truth. Oh, and the grace part was that he was simply in a good mood.
Most every time I've ever been stopped I've usually analyzed the NAZI's facial expression by the the time he arrives at my door. My favorite opening remark iz: SHE BURNED YOUR TOAST THIS MORNING DIDN'T SHE?AND YOU THINK IT'S MY FAULT Believe it ir not it worked ONCE Other times the request has been made to keep my hands in site, exit the car and place both hands on the roof and spread 'um! GO FIGER I've always figured if they stop me, If I'm not guilt this time, I'm over due anyway. I used to almost laugh when I'd get nailed on the Ohio Turnpike. $28 ticket regardless of the speed and they'd ask: MC or VISA and being a private road points never followed you home I think them dayz are gone tho'
Grace comes in many forms, all through out your day, most of the time we don't reconize it. Grace is unmerited favor, which is what the pastor says Jesus did for us.
X3 - I've experienced so much grace in my life that it blows my mind... Nothing I can do except be grateful every day and try to extend the same to others. I don't always succeed, but still I get another share! If that's not God, I don't know what is!!!
here is my blessing with speeding tickets When i worked doing dealer trades for ford of pompano beach. i would often swap with a big ford dealer in Orlando (the name escapes me). one day i swapped V6 convertible mustangs (slower than hell). on the Florida turnpike there is one exit between Orlando and Ft Pierce..YeeHaw junction. the rest is straight, flat highway (except for the occasional canal crossing) so i tried to make time here. so i found a group of cars that were flying...also noticed that the lead car had a V1 radar detector (Valentine 1 is oft considered the best). so i brought up the rear. the 3.8v6 was having a hell of a time keeping up but as we rounded a curve....i saw an FHP crown vic in the on-comming lanes throw on her lights and drive into the grass median...as i came past ... the trooper in the front seat POINTED AT ME!!!! at this point i knew i was screwed. i pulled over and she was actually very pleasant and even though she wrote me up for 94 in a 70. she actually told me she would have liked to have cut me a break if she could....i actually ended up talking to her for a few min about cars too. the blessing of this..... the day before...i did this same run except the mustang i took to orlando was a Grey Mach 1 and brought back a red supercharged cobra convertible...i cleared the last toll booth i floored it! didnt look down for a min or two....when i did ....the speedo read 150!!! so i backed off. .....id'a been in jail for sure had i got busted that day!!!
I know a really funny cop/ speeding joke. I'll post it sometime. Anyway, congrats on your good luck. Are you by any chance an insurance adjuster Krash?
