It looks like you just can read "Grand Safari" on the tailgate - also, the taillights and lack of skirts indicate something other than Olds. Even with the skirts off, I seem to remember you could still see that the car was supposed to have them. I know, washing the 73 Custom Cruiser was my job when I was 11 or so - washed it with powdered tide one time - oops different story!

My tail light thread may seem odd, but it seems to me most photos of classic station wagons I've seen published online and in print are of front end views- and the front of a station wagon is usually identical to the sedan counterparts...but it's not always the same with the rear view...
It would make sense for the tail lights on sedan and station wagons to be the same.....and in many cases, the designs were the same- but in other cases, they were quite different...When I was a boy I could identify the different make and model of a car by the tail lights. Of course these says most cars look the same, so I can't really use that technique anymore..

Great thread, as always. That Merc wagon that you weren't sure the year of, was a '65. Boy, it sure was easy back then to define the year of the car because they changed them every Fall. Nowadays, you can't tell if it's brand new or 5 years old. Give me the good ol days.
We should start a thread on wheel covers. I'm an expert on them. Throw me a wheel cover and chances are pretty darned good I can tell you the year and make.
That brings to mind a funny story. There's a river that runs through Cranford, New Jersey, the town in which I was brought up. One day, I recovered a mid sixties Pontiac wheel cover from the river, that somehow had found its way in there. On the way back to my house, I ran across a '63 beige Buick Riviera with the right rear wheel cover missing, so I put my newly found one on there. I've always been amused by how befuddled the owner must've been when he found that mismatched one on his car. It stayed on there for years, as I remember.

Gotta admit.....The old '50's & early '60's wagons had the best tail light styling. Just so creative and full of flare.
