My 92 Caprice wagon currently lacks wipers 99% of the time. They've worked twice since I got it, last time worked until I hit the sprayers. Rear wiper doesn't work either, nor does the cruise. I was thinking the multifunction switch but every old GM car I've had that had the switch go bad the turn signals wouldn't work either. Wiper motor has a crack on the cover and every time you turn them on, the idle goes up and you can hear an audible beep from the engine bay.
If you're looking for parts one place is here: http://rmsautoparts.com/index.php http://rmsautoparts.com/search.php?pg=1&stext=wiper+motor&sprice=&stype=&scat=19 My experience is that if they don't have something is that they will check around to all the dealers to see if they can find it for you.
Main question I have is what is the likely cause? I don't have the money to buy the switch and motor :-\
You might be able to get some cheap replacement parts used. Sorry I can't help with the electrical. Lots of parts and information over here: http://www.impalassforum.com/vBulletin/
First you need to test at the wiper motor to see if you have power and ground when the switch is on....second, I'd begin checking fuses closely if you have multiple systems not functioning, as the rear wipers run independently of the front wipers, or the cruise for that matter. Check fuse 2 and fuse 8 for the rear wiper....the rear window switch could also be bad, as could the rear wiper module. The front wiper runs off fuse 10. The cruise runs off fuse 18 and 19. The cruise uses the multifunction switch, the front and rear wipers do not. You may have multiple system problems....further diagnostics will be needed. Unfortunetly, my magic wand is in the shop and my wizards hat is at the dry cleaners....lol
Those symptoms you mention are new to me. The idle and sound thing...never heard of that before. It's a shame you don't have the bucks....I think you should take it somewhere OR get a shop manual set off ebay and track it down yourself. Everyone should have a shop manual for their car anyway. I'm sorry I have no answers for your problem. It's an unusual one as far as I can tell.
Sounds like the gear-drive is toast. Like others said, shop for a used one. Lube it up before you install it though.
I replaced the motor, same symptoms. Fuses are good, maybe it's the switch? I'm thinking about just wiring in a toggle switch for now until spring so I can fix it properly.
I know what you mean. The tools stick to your fingers in below-zero temperatures. So the new motor is making the noise too? Both of the wiper drives aren't sloppy or a bad lever arm pivot?
Those multi function turn signal switches are a real pain and expensive. Can you get one from the junkyard?
New motor makes the same noises. Is there a relay I'm missing or something? As for the switch, headed to the bone yard tomorrow.
