Definitely a weird pattern of wear on the sides. Why only on the lower half of the portion above the trim strip? And all the way from front to back, and on both sides? He could use a few more photos, but the price looks good.
Based in the chrome trim surround.. I would say this was a woodgrain optioned car and perhaps it fell into terrible shape and the scrapes are the result of trying to remove it
Same wear pattern as this. Just looks like the woodgrain slowly fading into oblivion. http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/threads/1971-plymouth-fury-sport-suburban.48419/
Woodgrain was standard on the Sport Suburban from '68 on. I think this assessment is probably correct. I know the Town & Country had the translucent woodgrain in '72 (lets a "hint" of body color through). It seems likely that Plymouth used similar woodgrain transfer, and I think this transfer was thinner than the opaque style. Thus, it would be subject to wearing through or drying out and flaking off. It's gotten quite in thin in places on our T&C. Fortunately, ours is garaged now, which slows the deterioration considerably. Even though the 360 wouldn't be my first choice for this car, I really wish I had the funds and space to spare for it.
