We were doing our usual round of the garage and estate sales this morning and came across this gem. She had it out in front of her house while the garage sale was going on. She would not give an asking price. She only said "the guides say it's worth in the $30,000 range." I wonder what guides those are. I'm sure she's hoping someone will make an offer, but people visiting garage sales are not usually looking to spend $30K. I did not find it on craigslist. She is the original owner, and the car has 38,000 miles. It does look very good. I believe the base and only engine on this was a 5.5L V-8. The Old Cars Price Guide does not carry values for Mercedes-Benz cars this new. The NADA guide, which is notorious for through-the-roof values, seems quite conservative in this case: low retail: $9600 average retail: $13,550 high retail: $24,400 Hagerty's "Auto Valuation Tool" gives an "average" value for one of these of $18,500, which is not out of line with the NADA values. Neither source comes anywhere close to $30,000 for a value. I don't find these values all that unreasonable. The original base price of this car was about $61,000, or about $127,000 in 2018 dollars.
Yeah, it sounds like she took the high average and added 25% to it, as if to say, "this is way above high average value." And I'm willing to bet, there is some sucker with cash burning a hole in their pocket, itching for this particular car model, and pays that money.
It seems, it was the only engine offered. I'll have to look in my Chiltons, to see if the 6.3 liter was offered. If she was in Germany, she'd be in the ball park, concerning the price she stated. This site is, however, on the high end: https://suchen.mobile.de/auto/mercedes-benz-sl-560-1988.html
way too high;and plenty with low miles out there; for sure not worth $30K; if all other things check out on this car, maybe $18-21K
Apparently, they get pretty spendy if you have super low miles. This one's in Henderson, NV. it's an '87, with 28,500 miles - $42,500 asking price. https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for...earchRadius=500&makeCode1=MB&modelCode1=560SL
I've got one it's an 86. The hard top lifts off and the convertible is manually lifted out from a lid the hard top sits on. Only one engine and auto transmission. There wasn't a lot of options on these things. Mercedes most expensive car at the time.
