I seem to remember 'Briarwood' being one of the trim version names on the Chevy Van around '69-'70?

Tried Yahooing Chevy Briarwood, came up with the Briarwood Chevy dealership...I remember seeing pictures, maybe even here at the forums,of late 50's/early 60's Chevy wagons with the names Briarwood and Greenwood.Had just been wondering if they brought the names back in the 70's.That's all...Now that it's been mentioned,I do remember seeing at least one Briarwood van.

Everyone close, but I think you are thinking of the "Greenbrier". It was actually the Corvair Van from 1961-65, THEN Chevy used the name again on the 1969-72 Chevelle wagons... the mid-line Chevelle wagon was called "Greenbrier", whereas the base model was "Nomad" and the top of the line Malibu wagon was Concours Estate. I think they also had a Concours wagon w/o woodgrain. I think '69-72 were the years that Greenbrier name was used... here is a link for more info... http://www.chevelles.com/wagons/68wagon.html

GMWAG, I think you are asking about a "Custom Cruiser" wagon. That is the white one with silver on the lower third that is pictured.

These particular GM wagons are known as "B-body wagons", because the platform was labeled "B" by GM. They came out in model year 1990 (maybe sedans only - wagons appearing a year later? (not sure on this fact)

There were Chevrolet versions (Caprice Classic), Oldsmobile versions (Custom Cruiser - surprisingly, there was no Oldsmobile sedan version of this platform - only the wagon), and Buick versions (Roadmaster Estate). There never was a Pontiac version of this vehicle - either sedan or wagon. Oh - and Cadillac had a sedan version only - the Fleetwood / Fleetwood Brougham - it had a slightly longer wheelbase, known as the 'D body'.

The Chevy version of the wagon had a plain flat roof. The Olds and Buick versions had a raised rear section with a fixed glass panel over the second seat (sun shaded on the inside).

The last year for these vehicles was model year 1996. The 1995 and 1996 models are more desireable because of their LT1 engine, which made much more power that the engines they had previous to that.

These were the last of the big domestic rear-drive wagons. After this, if you wanted a new big wagon, you had to buy what we call a 'Sport Utility Vehicle' - basically a truck with a station wagon body.

    missed a few things krash!

the wagons and sedans came out in 1991 except for the roadmaster sedan, it came out in 1992 and the fleetwood in 1993.
the olds custom cruiser was only made in 1991 and 1992. (why ...no one knows) there were no lt1 CC's

1991 was 305ci across the board 1992 made the 350ci gen1 Throttle body injection, the standard engine in buick and optional in the olds and chevy, the fleetwood was a tbi car for 1993 only
the LT1 actually appeared for the 1994 model years so there are 3 years for the LT1. the lt1 was still an option in the caprice sedan, the base engine was the L99 4.3 v8

That's a good looking wagon!..And I know what you mean about the "historical" classifications in registration...An acquaintance in town has a flatbed bobtail Chevy Apache from the mid-50's.He got it the California Historical Vehicle plates and now that he'd like to update the drivetrain from a big inline six and a four on the floor to a much newer diesel and an automatic,he can't...I wouldn't mind keeping the six in this one.Hopefully it's got better than GM's infamous two speed auto.

That van sure looks good...Once I'd read the history of the Nomad nameplate,I've been bugged by how Chevy treated the model. In 57,there was nothing better than a Chevy Nomad,by the early 60's it was the least you could get from Chevy. Then they let it linger till 72-73.

The two speed autos that car shows like Car And Driver and My Classic Car have talked about.Usually to complain about the bad gas mileage that vintage Chevies got with it.(but also, that they were a lot of fun)That topped out at about 70 mph...Now,if you're drag racing, two speeds could be more than enough...I'm talking, the kind they were putting in cheap base model ones,I would suppose. One lady on My Classic Car was bragging up the 67 Camaro she'd bought brand new(and still had). The cheapest Camaro on the lot, with an inline six and "the two speed automatic transmission"...That kind...I don't know too much about dragster transmissions...
