I am up to $20,000 invested in my 72 Chevelle wagon and I am about to have a $12,000 paint job done. Someone please be my voice of reason and tell me to stop! I am considering going from placer gold to Muslane Blue. This car stuff is like a drug addiction...
I try not to focus on the money. My wagon is nowhere near what I want it to be and the amount of money I've put into it is really ridiculous. I keep telling my wife that the car is my hobby (one of them) and a hobby is something that involves exchanging money for massive amounts of happiness. You can't put a price on your happiness can you?
Dude, repeat after me: "I enjoy cars." Next: "I enjoy happiness." And then: "Cars give me happiness." That is the man's hobby mantra. The problems, the cost, the wife/GF constantly nagging, they'll always drag you down. Say this mantra three times, then jump right back in.
You guys are not helping. I just expanded the project - engine out to do firewall and new body mounts!
Whoa there.......... let's look at this with some objectivity. Do you anticipate keeping the Malibu wagon for A LONG TIME? I would NOT put $12k into a new paint job unless you were......
I have had my Alfa for 32 years - my Corvette for 16 years - I plan to will this car to my Children - Love my Wagon and building it for me..
I think you may mean Chevy Mulsanne Blue? Muslane is close but a body guy may wonder, a lot of their brains are totally scrambled from inhaling lots of not good stuff.
if you plan on driving it think seriously about rock chips and what you will do.$12,000 is an awful lot for paint on a car you will drive
STOP! But secretly I'm very jealous that you can afford to spent that much on your hobby. I hope your wife doesn't pick up a hobby.
I do you plan to drive it. Not too concerned about rock chips because they can be repaired. The paint job on my Corvette was more than that and I drive it.
The wife collects hallmark ornaments. We have an entire wall in the basement full. She is very supportive of my hobby, it keeps me out of the bars.
But of course I'm helping. I'm insanely jealous, as I can't even spend $12 on my Chero, but affirmation is very helpful.
Hubby is of mine too, it also keeps me/us out of the bars. One really needs to have a supportive partner with these larger hobbies, it sure makes the whole thing more enjoyable. In my case hubby is the key to the entire project if he wasn't on board I probably wouldn't have Fannie right now. I'm hoping we can get back on track with her resto next spring. You will of course keep us up on the paint job won't you? Are you doing any of the prep yourself?
I certainly will. The brake booster went out so I am in the process of going through the braking system. Master, Booster, lines, calipers and wheel cylinders. I will remove all the trim and bumpers, door pads etc. Looks like it may be next fall before he can et me in. I see you have a Beaumont. Love them - saw a original owner one at a show recently. Good luck with your restoration !
