Drove the Mercury yesterday and today, smooth rides. Only when you have to break quickly there is a bit of shudder when I continue. When you kick the gas it disappears. We also had that before the winter. We have been looking around on the internet and found some info on maybey a different gearbox oil. Or add anti shudder liquid. We will give it a try one of these days, apparently this is something that happens more often with Fords
anti shudder liquid.???????????? We can't find that here in the USA. I hear it is usually next to the blinker fluid. I'd have someone check out the brakes if it mostly happens when slowing down.
Maybey shudder is the wrong word (I'm Dutch). They do have fluid here for that (american brand). Brakes are fine.
I've had brakes that need work, maybe bad drum or rotor that did shudder. That's a good word in any language.
I'm guessing the translation is not correct re- "anti shudder liquid".......but if you can buy that in a bottle I'll order 100 cases from you and start flipping beaters again! Back to serious now...... I think we need a bit more of a explanation about the shudder. You mention when you brake heavy so to me that sounds like front brake rotors may be warped but only warped to the point where heavy braking it is noticed, not normal easy braking. But then you mention when you hit the gas it goes away. So... is it the brakes only shuddering or is it the engine that shudders? when stopped after heavy braking is the engine itself shuddering still until you give it gas??
Maybe a new Muffler Bearing? As I sit here reading I'm trembling at the thought of brake failure due to shudder or defective parts. Of course, it's possible a bad rotor or drum would cause the shudder or vibration, until the pedal is released unshuddering it because there is no longer contact again. I'm betting on worn brakes. Then again take a look at the U-joints too.
It could also be having a problem downshifting due to a misadjusted kickdown lever, staying in OD or 3rd gear until it's given wide-open throttle.
From what I'm gathering, it's only after the stop and when Mr. Vandervoort starts again does the car shudder. It sounds maybe like Hobo might be on to something - trans not downshifting and trying to accelerate like you put the car in 3rd gear on a manual instead of first. Maybe Mr. Vandervoort can link the product he's using and may be able to get a better idea of whats up.
