Hi, I need to change the tires on my '68 CP. I checked the date codes on my rears and they are Goodyear Tiempo tires from either 1987 or 1977! They look okay on the outside but I hear a humm at around 60mph. The tires on it now are P225/75r15. I have had trouble locating a good quality replacement in that size, let alone in whitewall. I always buy Michelin but the only option is the LTX m/s 2 that is in P235/75r15 and is a light truck tire. I am worried that about what the ride quality would be and if they would be too big. There is a Kumho Solus KR21 that has mixed reviews and BF Goodrich Radial t/a in P235/70R15 that is very close to the p225 size. The tires I am not a fan of are Hankook (have them on another car) and the Cooper Trendsetter is a basic tire with a low mileage rating. I want a set of tires that will have good handling, reliability, and handle with modern traffic and adverse weather. I've given up on finding whitewalls even though that would be the best option. At this point I am leaning toward either the BFG or the Michelin LTX tires unless others have different suggestions? Thanks, Wayne
You have listed the tires in that size that come in a white wall. They are getting few and far between in a good tire. They have 2 different Yokohama white wall tire, a Avid touring and a Aegis touring which should retail between $95 and $110. I will look some tomorrow at work and see if I see any info on a 225/75R15 to pass along to you. The ones you mentioned along with the Yokohama are the higher end of 15" white walls hate to say. They had at one time a few Toyo Spectrums with a WW but don't remember the sizes. Other than that you would have to go to TBC or a Del Nat privately branded label tires which are most places least expensive tire. Hope that helps and if I come across other brands I will post them here. Dennis
i ran the LTX ones on a lowered 93 roady wagon hauling caskets for a guy. they were awesome, smooth and quiet tires. rotated them at 30k miles (1 year) and couldnt tell the fronts from the rears and they only looked about 3 months old. the yoko geolanders i have on my car are getting worn and earlier today I ordered a set of LTX michelins for my car for 508 shipped from DTD on ebay. they will be the tire choice for my 74 lesabre when it hits the road too. i think they are a tire you can cut your own white wall into if you dare (see youtube on how to so it)
The Radial T/A is a good tire. That is what I will be putting on the 88 Grand Marquis sedan. Just wish they s made the G/A Advantage, which was the same tire but with a white wall.
My LTX tires arrived today so they will get mounted/balanced probably sat. BUT CHECK THIS OUT..... I paid $508 shipped for them, then today I get an email from discounttiredirect saying download this rebate form and get it in the mail before feb 16th to get your free $100 visa card. TOTALLY COOL!!
Hi everyone. Thank You for all the advice. I had to visit Les Schwab to put tires on a Civic. They installed Toyo Eclipse tires in the front. That car now handles much better and glides better. I inquired with the guy at the counter and he informed me they carry the same tire in p225/75r15 and in WW. What bothered me was that they would take a week to be ordered and the quote to install was $623. To me, that number was pretty high. At least those tires are made in Japan, but I don't know what kind of wear life to expect. The Michelin LTX are tempting (and cheaper) but I am not sure if it would fit for all four wheels without rub issues. The 235's are only 1/2in larger. Is it true that '68 Mercs would have originally come with a tire taller than p225/75? Thanks, Wayne
the michelins are wider AND taller than most 235/75/15 tires due to most tire manufacturers selling smaller tires than what the size says. got my LTXs installed last sunday and we have had ice and snow since then. the tires work excellent.
Hi Yuk, Are the LTX M/S the ones that are taller than regular 235's? Those are one of my options and they got a rebate available at Costco. Its down to either p225 Toyo's or 235 Michelin LTX m/s truck tires. Hard to believe that even finding good p225 in blackwall, let alone whitewall, is so tough.
i run 235 75 15 tires on everything i own. michelins are always "larger" than the others. yokohama seems to be the closest to the same saze but aint. all other brands i have used are at least .5 inch shy in every direction.
The Toyos are excellent tires, but the fact that they have to order the P225 tires speaks volumes about the big changes to cars' tires over the last 25 years. Yes they are expensive, but just with good care, they last up to 80K, and in my book, well worth it. Schwab also includes the other items you want with a full tire purchase--free flat repair, free rotation, free air pressure checks, etc.
A guy with way more years in the tire business explained it to me this way, "think of it as a good pair of jeans, the fit is more true than a cheap pair of jeans!" By the way, I first realized this in a farm tire, guy busted a front tire on his tractor that had a loader on front and had me get him the least expensive tire I could get him in the same size he had. Came back next day to get a matching tire because of difference in height that made it difficult to scoop and back drag with his bucket.
I had a set of BFG T/A's on my 77 Catalina Safari, 235/70/15 on the front and 275/60/15 on the rear. They were on for about 3 years and put less than 1500 miles when I noticed they had deep cracks between the treads. Not happy at all. Replaced those with Cooper Cobra GT's and am very happy with the way they handle and how quiet they are compared to the BFG's. They are about 3 years old with no visible wear and have about 8000 miles on them. I thought maybe the BFG's should have been better than that, but I had also put a set Traction T/A's on my wife's Monte Carlo SS and only got 4 years and 35000 miles before they were cracking apart. No more BFG's for me.
Thanks everybody. I did some measuring today. Looks like the Michelins would be too big in front (outer fender opening) and getting real close in the rear wheel openings. I just need to track down some Toyos. Wayne
Funny thing, I never heard of Toyos until the tire shop I deal with talked me into two for my Dodge quadcab when they were the only ones he had in my size. I always buy two when one goes bad.Actually one or two sizes larger. After two years and several thousand miles I needed two more. Those factory originals eventually cracked out. Been almost another two years and all four Toyos still look good. Even better, the truck seems to handle better. It came with Michelins that wore well. But I almost could see air in all the sidewall cracks. . I hate parts not made in USA but it's getting difficult to find anything decent, or affordable.
Do you have a shop that can install tires for you? I'd recommend buying some online. onlinetires.com has a large variety, including the following White Walls in that size. COOPER TRENDSETTER SE 102S WSW HANKOOK OPTIMO H724 102S WW SAFFIRO SF3000 102S WW WINDFORCE PRIMETOUR 102T WSW MAXXIS MA-1 102S WW http://www.onlinetires.com/
