I'm hoping to get some advice from the Roadmaster owners. I've found a '92 Roadmaster wagon with 66,000 miles. I know the '94-'96 models seems to be more sought after. However, this car is clean with low mileage. It does have some surface rust in the front fender wells and on parts of the under carriage. I'm looking for opinions about the good and the bad of this model. Asking price is $6800. Below is a photo of the car. Here is a link to 100 pictures. http://www.use.com/tmpviewer.pl?uid=154131&saveid=1429787
Man that's pristine!! Nice find. Even the woodgrain trim is intact! The '92-'93 RMW's are great cars and will give you pretty good mileage. The '94-'96 cars are so sought after because of the standard LT1 engines and the upgrade from 4L60 transmissions to the 4L60E Electronic units. I can't really speak to the improvements the 4L60E introduced but I suspect someone else here can. That '92 should have the 5.7L/350ci L05 engine which will still give you plenty of oomph despite being slightly smaller in output than the LT1. If the wheel wells already have some surface rust then have a look way up in the top of the wheel wells. If this car was anywhere near salt in the winter there may be some holes up in there. From the amount of rust I can see in the front wheel well, it would be worth checking that. My '94 had a gaping hole in the rear wheel well that had almost completely rusted out the seat belt mount inside. It looked like the mount was bolted in after the undercoating went on and the rust started with the bolts. All of the RMW's are known to have the rear vent windows leak so have a look in the spare tire well and see if you have any rust in there. A number of them also had some poor seals in the roof line on either side of the rear hatch glass. If that's the case with this one you may see a few little rust bubbles above the rear brake lights. It's a pretty easy fix, just a heads up. It looks like there is a little spot of rust over the passenger side tail light. The price seems a little high to me, even for mileage that low. It has been a few years however since I last shopped and located a Roady in that condition and these have been climbing in price for some time so I could be right out to lunch on value. I'd say go for it!
Thanks for the reply, Cyber Wizard. I will ask for photos of the areas you mentioned. I also plan to see how much negotiating the seller is willing to do.
That wagon is priced to high, mid 4's maybe because of the year and thats if there is no rust. Now, if that was a 96 it probably would be gone by now with that mileage.
I have no complaints about my '92 Roadmaster. Great riding and driving car. I also agree that's a lot of money for a '92. I would expect $3500 or so to be a fair price but maybe I'm out of touch with these.
Advice needed I just saw a 96 with 77,000 mi, tow pkg. and heated seats go for $7300.00 in Michigan last week. I bought a 96 loaded with 76,000 in 2011 for $6500.00. You need to negotiate a little.
I know the '92 isn't sought after as much as the lt1 cars and I feel I got a good deal on it but I payed $1750 for mine with 74,000 miles and had service records with it. The body has couple dents but very presentable, interior is great and I would value it in $3000 range. ($2800 to $3200)
Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll pass on this one and keep looking. I'm in no rush and wasn't looking for a Roadmaster in particular. I just stumbled upon it and thought it was really clean.
