A puddle jump trip between 2 Hawaiian islands, a under 1 hour flight if I remember and I remember this on the news. Was a very long time ago (late 1980's??). Pilot IMO is a true hero to land the crippled plane:bowdown:

Here's a bit of TV trivia for ya - This very same car was used in a Midas Muffler commercial in the early '70s. A father goes out to his car so he and his wife can go out for a night on the town. Car doesn't start, so he asks hesitantly; "Son, can I borrow YOUR car tonight?" to which the son tosses him the keys to this Barracuda. The father, not used to a standard with a stiff clutch, goes hopping off into the night!

This occurred in April of 1988. The sea air of Hawai'i weakened the rivets that held the roof panels together. Combined with frequent, short flights and the corresponding pressurization/depressurization cycles, the cabin experienced an explosive decompression at approximately 22,000'. As mentioned, a flight attendant was killed when she was sucked out of the cabin. The pilot was able to retain control of the aircraft through flaps and throttles. The 737 made a safe landing. After the investigation was complete, the aircraft was destroyed, and no parts of the 737 were reused on any other plane.

That's it. My acquaintance owned a well-known auto body shop in Orange County, and was traveling to his Hawaii vacation condo.......

Truly an interesting vehicle--the German Kettenkraftrad (IIRC, the translation of the name is 'tracked wheeled vehicle'), built by NSU. It had an Opel 36HP inline 4, and was the only tractor small enough to fit in the hold of a Ju52 cargo plane for use by Luftwaffe paratroopers. Later, they were issued to Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS units (the one pictured is from the 1st SS Panzer Division) for various uses.

Today's German army has replaced them with quads. I wonder how many quads can tow an Me-262 or plow snow:

We should find out. There are some new-manufactured Me262-a1's here at Paine Field in South Everett. They were built by The Me262 Project, in the scramble hangar next to the main runway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_262_Project

The plane they duplicated had the original Rheinmetall-Borsig 30mm cannons; they removed them and placed one on display in their offices. Man, that sucker was huge!

Those planes had trouble enuff lifting off, since the afterburner was not yet inventd

Must have been like driving a normal car starting in 3rd gear. Uncle Schick even wanted them converted over to bombers which was even more insane

Looks like a tight squeeze for anyone attempting to shoehorn a smallblock Chevy into there:

Adolf Galland nearly got in hock with Adolf Hitler over converting the 262s to bombers. simply because Galland knew the engineers designed it for air-to-air combat only (although the nose cannons and one of the new weapons developed for the 262, small rockets for use against bombers, would also have worked for ground strafing). Hitler simply wanted them loaded with two, IIRC, 350-Kg bombs under the nose. What a waste.
