Perfect opportunity to drop in a modern powerplant.
    - 4.6 / 5.4 modular V8? (I think my choice would be the 5.4, rather than say a DOHC 4.6 from a Lincoln Aviator)

Stay away from the Tritons. The cam phasers will kill you when they go. That is a $5,000 repair.

Riverz, the new Coyote uses the same cam phasers as the Triton. After what a pal went through on his F-150, I would not touch one of them with a barge pole, plus it simply does not have the low end torque a heavy car needs to feel lively. Drop in a good 351 with an AOD, and then you have a car. The Canadian spec 351 was 215 horse, 390ft/lbs at 2,200 rpm in 89, and that will move this car with authority!

I have a Coyote in my 2013 F150 Super Crew Cab, and it scoots down the road pretty nicely, even with the highway gear I have in it. When I've researched performance numbers, this truck is supposed to run a 15.4 second quarter mile. Not a race truck, but plenty respectable.

That being said, I agree; a well done, mildly built 351W will push this wagon down the road just fine.
