So i know I can get the beltline trim for the tailgate, but what about the seal for the actual tailgate, and the glass? Cars getting painted soon and I have every other door seal and body filler, but no seal for the glass to rollup into or the tailgate to seal against the body like a door weatherstrip. Part numbers? suggestions? Mark
I found a GM part number for that piece, but I can't get it to cross. Even my local Buick dealer drew a blank. What I found is 2022-5797. This is the 1.25 " wide outer seal. there is an inner seal also, I haven't found that number yet, still chasing it. Another thing I'm having a hard time finding is the stainless steel wind deflectors to fit our beloved 4 door wagons, (B body) Mine is an '89. The Electra and Lesabre unit's are thick on the ground, but about 2 inches too long for the wagons. Anybody have a source? These were factory and dealer installed, found in JC Whitney cat. for years. now they seem to be unobtanium . Thanks Paul
Lots of these stupid things are unobtanium. I found a decent tailgate seal at the junk yard and I talked to steele rubber bout doing a repop, they were swamped so they said call back in a month or so, ill prolly send them the worse of the 2 seals to see if its something they can make up easily or if its gonna be a long term thing to put in the line. I cant find the plastic strips that go under the skid strips on the roof, the long stainless slats. The ones I have are in pieces, intact enough to reproduce and unfortunately Im gonna end up reusing em. I even found a part number for em but they are also NLA Mark
Question. For these automotive parts that are no longer being produced, does that also mean that they are under patent and could not be produced and sold by another company? How do the copyright laws apply to things like rubber and plastic parts and foam rubber seals?
There is no "patent" issue, but automakers own the rights to their designs. As a result, they have cracked down heavily on repro parts manufacturers, especially for parts that have manufacturer logos or part number. The licensing process to get approval to start reproducing a part is lengthy and expensive.
