Hi everyone, I tried to start my Colony Park yesterday. I hadn't started in about 6 weeks and it is parked in the garage. It has a holley 4bbl carb with a 429. I set the choke and the blade went down partway (it is about 85 degrees outside). I turned the key and it cranked but did not catch. I repeated cranking and pumped the gas pedal and the choke blade went fully open. I went to check the choke and felt alongside the housing. It felt very warm and the ground wire at the housing was very hot. The ignition coil was warm as well. I pulled out the battery and got it checked. It is a 700cca battery and the auto shop said it was at 65%. They fully charged it and it checks out good now I am going to try starting again within a day. Is it normal for the choke coil to get hot like that (especially the wire)? All I did was cranking and choke blade was stuck fully open when the choke became hot. I had issues starting it the prior time after it sat for a week until it finally caught and stayed running. I had to keep the gas pedal pressed down all the way. I know there is a leak at the sender seal so I am not sure if that is allowing fuel to drain back? Do I just need to pump the gas pedal a bunch of times before starting? If so, should the choke stay closed while pumping? Thanks, Wayne
You have what seem to be two separate problems, IMHO: 1) The choke t-stat is not supposed to have any power until the alternator is turning to make power. It should be hooked by the white/black stripe wire to one of the terminals (if someone can look that up, I'd appreciate it. I've forgotten which terminal it's hooked to) on the back or side of the alternator; 2) If the coil is heating up but the engine's not starting, the Pertronix unit or the wiring is bad, as it sounds like the coil's saturated but the unit is not turning the circuit on and off. Get a 12 volt test light, and hook it to the NEG terminal on the coil and to ground. Crank the engine, watching the test light; if it flashes, the unit is good and the coil may be shorted. If it doesn't, the unit or wiring may be bad.
It's a good possibility that if you send me your center facing 3rd row seats the car will run the same. Silvertwinkiehobo gave you some good info and quick easy tests to narrow things down. Try those out and let us know. Mark
Hi, Silverinkiehobo thanks for the diagnostic help. I am going to try and get the wagon fired up when I come back from my trip next week. Mark, I guess since my 3rd row is a rear facing unit; I could rule that out as a culprit.
I do what I can. Just an FYI, if you have any Q's, just post them here, as my PM mailbox is FUBAR and I haven't got it sorted out yet.
