On my CP I will be stripping the woodgrain at some point and either painting or replacing it. In the mean time however there is some gunk that makes it look worse than it is (especially on the tailgate). I think it is probably some adhesive from a previous cover-up attempt that has gotten dirty. Hopefully this picture will give you an idea of what I am talking about. Any ideas on what might be a good choice fro trying to remove the goo without destroying the underlying vinyl woodgrain? Isopropyl or denatured alcohol, goo-gone, simple green...??? mike P.S. sorry for the typo's in the subject line.
absolutely NOTHING with a solvent ever on the vinyl woodgrain! EVER! use mequiars vinyl, leather rubber protectant on a microfiber cloth. itll get the crap off and bring the color back. do this on the entire woodgrain each time you wash the car. the woodgrain on you CP is far from roached and painted woodgrain looks like crap compared to the vinyl on the fomoco wagons. preserve what you have, its in A- B+ grade and not even that faded. Thankyou, will give that a try. Unfortunately the sides are beyond help... Fortunately the paint underneath looks solid so the plan was to remove the destroyed woodgrain and touch up the paint beneath as necessary until I can afford a proper replacement. mike
I got some Meguire's (not the high gloss) and it didn't remove very much of the glue (it gives a fabulous finish though). Given that I have used Simple Green on a lot of vinyl and plastics I decided to try it on an out of the way portion of the side that will need replacing anyway to see how it did. As with other things I have used it on there was no apparent ill effects so I decided to get semi-bold. I started by cleaning off the glue with the Simple Green using only enough to get it off. You can see in some of the closeups below that I was a little bit too cautious in some spots and will need to redo. After getting the glue off I used dish soap in water to get all of the SG residue off and then rinsed thoroughly with the garden hose. After it dried I applied the Meguire's. If all the woodgrain was as good as the tailgate I would leave it alone. Here you can see on the right side where I did the front door but not the back so you can see the difference. Much better results than I expected. And here you can see some residual glue that I will have to come back and get. mike
yes the sides of the wagon are roached beyond repair. my tip was only for dirty woodgrain, didnt know your case was that bad. that is c- woodgrain.. its pretty done.
