The ones with that sweet little Mazda Diesel did get around 50mpg IIRC.

It seems to me, Ford took a percentage of Mazda's ownership and a near identicle vehicle was imported as a Mazda?

The '83 definitely had the 1.6 from the factory (unless it is diesel). I understood that they re-worked the 1.6 at some point to avoid bending the valves if the timing belt broke. I don't recall exactly when this change was supposed to have been made.

It was so common a problem, the aftermarket was selling heads for the early 1.6. In defense, people weren't used to doing timing belt maintenance. The timing belts on OHC Pinto motors (2000, 2300) did not have a specified replacement interval, and, if they broke (my wife broke at least one on a company car), you just got towed in, had a new belt put on, and went on your merry way. Interference motors, as they were called, were something new to the American motorist in the early '80s.
