So I've got a 1970 Country Squire that's mostly original and in good shape. I've put dual exhaust and some wheels on it, but that's it. I would really like the front end of the car to sit about 2 inches lower than it does right now. It's not a tail dragger, but the front is slightly higher than the back (and the back is perfect). Simple question that I'm sure has an obvious answer, but I've never done this kind of thing. What's my easiest solution? Having someone cut springs? Replace springs?
...or drop spindles? I can't find any listings for this exact application, but I wonder if some for a similar car might work.
Eaton Detroit springs can probably get you some springs with a 2" drop, but the drop will be based on the original ride height. I talked to them the other day, and was told that rule of thumb is most original springs have settled an inch or so. If this is true, their 2" drop springs would lower your front about an inch from its current height. But, it's all still a gamble on the exact drop you'll get. I've cut springs before. Even Eaton recommends it, if you don't get the desired drop out of their springs. It will result in a firmer ride. I wouldn't remove more than a coil. I cut 3/4 of a coil from the original springs in my '77 LTD II Squire wagon. Unfortunately, I didn't measure the before and after, but it looked like about an inch drop was the result. You might want to cut a half a coil, check the height, then cut again if you want more. Once you make that cut, you can't go back. Here are before & after pics.
Hey, thanks! That's good information. And that second pic is pretty indicative of how I want mine to sit.
