You paint everything with a broad brush. You expect us to be gullible enough to believe because you've been driving for 30 years that you're now an automotive expert. The fallacy of equating age with knowledge is an old one. It just don't hold water.

So, you've derbied over 100 cars (without olds engines because they're crap) so what does that have to do with anything? Ya worked in a junk yard....Those ain't the most stellar credentials for an automotive diagnostician.

You've driven cars that had the problem, but never bothered to figure out why. You just made the assumption that they are crap. Various models of ALL GM cars suffered from the problem. My Catalina had the same problem when I got it.

But, consider you are in the business of fixing cars for people. Joe Blow is one of your best customers and bought his car new. He trusts you to keep it running in tiptop condition. After a few years of extreme Northern driving conditions, it develops the problem. Are you going to tell him his car is crap and they all have the same problem. He'll tell you to go pound sand and take his business to someone who can fix it and being the sympathetic souls that they are, they will proceed to stick it to him while badmouthing your skills. So, you learn how to repair the problem to keep your customers happy. The first few that you work on will result in a lot of unpaid time figuring it out, but you write that off as the price of education. That time is paid for on future jobs when word gets around that Ole Dave can fix your car when others can't.

GM cars had some basic design flaws that didn't show up immediately, but developed over time. Knowing what those flaws are and how to correct them is what separates the diamonds from the coal. Nuff Said!!

I,ve never seen a "marine tag" on anything
I had some difficulty tracing the heritage of 350 chev one time,.the engine code didn't come back as being from a car.,.turned out it was a mercury marine block.

I did do a quick google and came up with this:
    http://www.v8buick.com/archive/index.php/t-78425.html

So you have seen what might be now the 4th? engine not known to exist,.
You really should tell the folks on the buick forum, too,..it'd be exciting for them.
It really would have been cool if you had kept the "marine tag" from that engine, i,m sure even back then you must have known it was quite rare,.

Just how does a motor get broken almost in half including the lifter galleys'?

I,ve detonated a few engines over the years,.never seen quite that much carnage,.

I do remember the stock olds starters did have a hot start problem sometimes, I used to put a heavy ground cable right to the motor, The race car had an asbestos heat pad on the starter as the hooker headers passed really close to the starter. I doubt with todays technology there would be a problem, if the stock starter was replaced with a more modern high torque mini starter with well shielded solenoid. I can understand how frustrating it must have been for you to enter into a demo derby with an olds powered car, and end up stalling and not being able to restart it.
I,m sure thats where you have gotten your dislike for "junk" oldsmobile engines,.from your experiences killing as many cars as you say you have. I,m also sure that you read a lot on the internet, and some of your opinions are borrowed from other sources,

The buick stage 1 engine would be quite a bit better performer than a stock 455 pontiac.

Nuff said from me too,. these are dinosaur motors, and it was many years ago,.I,ve moved on to more modern more efficient iron.

Old fox it really is a simple swap,.

    Nick

The only Joe Blow I ever knew ended up changing his lastname. Now that he's called Joe Blough, he is no longer doomed to end up earning a living as a vaccuum cleaner salesman

Wow your reading comprehension skills really do suck. Do you pay any attention to anything you read before opening your pie hole? You really think with access to THOUSANDS of parts at the time, I did not change everything on the frikkin cars to fix the problem? FOR your information there bud I am sure probably derbied way more than a hundred cars I said I DROVE than many (olds powered vehicles and they were all low powered duds) and was one of the reasons they were not used.

And FYI I've been driving more than 30 years and fixing cars along with laboring in the bone yard and local garages for the same. And mind you at some of the BEST places in the area, and LEARNED from some of the BEST mechanic's in those garages that were from the generation before myself.

Sorry like I said I road tested and WORKED on plenty and I know a DUD when I drive one.

    Yup your right NUFF SAID!

Oh boy I see where this is going now ya call me a liar? (Guy's who love derby drivers club at your service) Really man you've never seen a BADLY FROZEN broken block now have ya? (let me say this real slow for ya) it had WATER IN IT, IT got REALLY COLD OUTSIDE. When water gets below 32 degrees if FREEZES and EXPANDS! Have seen a 460 ford marine do the same thing blew the sides out and the lifter valleys as well! Mind you the buick was far worse as the cyls had also cracked(probably from sitting far longer than the ford had, it had only set that winter)

I never said it was blown up.

Funny too as a young lady I know had a 71 GS 455 with a blower on it,( drag racer) and saw the same thing I did. And she also knew what it was.

I don't like liars, cheaters and thieves nor do I appreciate being called any of the above. I know what a saw and others saw it too.

And YUP a stage1 will run better than a stock 455 poncho had one in a Riviera and it screamed(still have the heads in my basement wanna call me a liar on that one too?), never said it wouldn't. hell a stock Buick 455 will sure as hell run better than a stock 455 olds any day as will the poncho, and with less problems too.

Oh and FYI YES I smashed the living daylights out of that Riviera too it won me lot's of CASH! :) AND oh can't wait for this one that Riviera was a plain Jane bench seated NON GS car with the stage1 drive train!( oh PLEASE call me a liar again and call me out on that one) as I have the heads and trans to prove it! I had the 3.23 12 bolt posi too but YES I used that in the DEMO! :)!!!!!

Oh and BTW I don't need to read about what I've already tested driven and proven myself. My source is right here bud.

    Thanks! Toodles!

    :)

To speak to me in that manner is a miscalculation on your part.
