I'll take a single piece of trim any day. Real wood, held on by real nails equals no funny off-gassing.

Me too. However, my point is, the finger joint is still stronger than a plain wood area.

I've been a carpenter for over 40 years and do a lot of trim work, and finger jointed trim does suck.:D You can still buy real solid wood interior trim, may have to stain or paint it but at least you can and have it look like something when you're done.
A finger jointed board or piece of trim is not stronger than a piece of solid wood.

Exactly!! It's made from short scraps of dissimilar wood; ie, heartwood and sapwood. They have different expansion rates and will warp at the joints if you don't use them quickly. When applied to outside trim, the joints soon separate and water gets into them. Then they swell at different rates and water gets into the joints. This is even after they have been painted.

I replaced all 3 of my south facing doors 2 years ago, calked and primed them, and 2 coats of paint. Every one of them is failing at the finger joints. What really pisses me off is I had my French doors custom made to fit an existing rough opening with a left hand opening door. Paid $2400 for them and they are rotting at the finger joints near the sill.

All of what you say is true. My POINT is...put your knee at the joint and break the trim....it will break somewhere OTHER that the glue joint. I'm not arguing that the trim with the joints is better. Many tests have shown what I'm trying to point out.
Let me say it this way....the glue is stronger than the wood.

Is there any kind of warranty on their work? I think I'd call them and ask the question.:)

What is one of the worst jobs in the world... Imagine you work on movie/TV production sets and there is a scene that requires a baby to cry... and it's your job to pinch the baby when they say action... :biglaugh:

It must be awful boring in Chicago right now! There are way more worse jobs than "baby pincher". Besides I do that free all the time. I also take their candy when the mother is not looking!
