    Hello!
I have been looking high and low for a ready made, specific to my 1972 country squire, trailer hitch. I would think the large manufacturers that made these years ago would still have the patterns and be able to supply one, but no such luck. Any thoughts, or is it time to build my own, which isn't that big a deal. It would be nice to buy something and install it out of a box.

    Thanks!

    Tony

One thing to watch with the Universal mount receivers is how they mount to the frame. I will NEVER again install a hitch that mounts to the bottom of the frame rail. The Reese Class II I had on my 89 Grand Marquis is the reason the car was not repaired after a rear end collision. The mounts tore the frame rails. A hitch that mounted using the bumper mount holes would have bent the frame, but it could have been straightened.

Thanks! I appreciate you thinking of me. I actually got quite lucky. I looked high and low, and even contacted several of the hitch manufacturers. U haul actually offered to design and install one at no charge if I would leave my car with them for 3 days in Tucson. I guess they would then have the specs for these cars. That was pretty impressive. I am still amazed that As many of these turkeys as were built, that no one still has the drawings to produce one today.
However, I spotted a new Reese class three receiver on eBay that was at a auto parts liquidator. The only info they had was that it was for an older Ford or Merc wagon, year and model unknown. I couldn't cross the Reese number. It was obsolete. But the pictures looked promising And I am pretty good with my chop saw and mig welder, so I was confident that this would be a good start. I don't usually get lucky, but I'll be darned if when it came it was for a 69-72 full sized Ford! Exact fit for my car. It took less than an hour to install and is awesome!
I also was fortunate to find all of the NOS factory trailer wiring harnesses between Green Sales and on eBay. I managed to find a vintage new in the box Kelsey brake controller. I am all set to tow.

Next week, the Squire and I are driving 1550 miles from Albuquerque to Ann Arbor to pick up a pristine 1978 Apache popup camper. I am pretty excited.

Thanks again for your responses. This is a good forum with a lot of good people.

That's great! I was going to mention cruise your local junkyards and salvage a hitch off a retired wagon. Then send it to TX to have 81X11's pop clean and paint it for you! Glad you found one. (y)

Usually a person can adapt an old hitch to almost anything.
That was a great deal. Hit the road and have fun. Lady Luck is with you now.:thumbs2:

When you look for one for the Vista Cruiser, double check. You may find that the 77 and up 'box wagon' hitch will fit just fine, since G.M. used the old A body frame as the basis for the new B and C body cars that were being downsized for 77.

I've come across plenty of hitches for the 77-93(?) GMs. On the 73-77 Olds forum I have a thread going and from my gathering there, there isn't one that will "bolt up". I even asked the question about the 77 and up cars and no one had an answer. Guess I'll have to find one and see.
