The weight coems from technology. The metal may not be as thick (or not as much of it) but the weight is all made up for in way of computerized parts, electronics, bigger batteries, airbags, seat belts, and you have to admit, people have gotten bigger since the 70s!

Those Big Macs are finally catching up with society!

Oh yes! Even the 80s Chargers were quick little 2-DOOR cars!

Could you imagine having the Rebel Flag and an "01" on a modern 4-dr Charger? Roscoe might actually catch the Dukes in that case!

Hmmm. Let's see, now. The electronics, I will grant you. My Grand Marquis has the biggest battery available, all 1,100 CCA of it, so it isn't that. I've got 6 seat belts, the new one has 5, so it isn't that. The 78 has more room, so it isn't the space for bigger people, either. Do air bags really weigh THAT much? It isn't even the wheels that explain it, since Bertha has 5 steel wheels versus 4 alloys. Bertha also has a VERY heavy big block cast iron 400 under the hood. None of this light-weight allow for her! I still don't see where the weight is in the new cars. It isn't even in the bumpers, since the plastic/foam things they use now are as light as possible, oh and don't actually absorb bugger all. They just break.
