Are you speaking with a forked tongue? Or are you speaking the truth?
Maybe DocZombie will buy a hearse and use it as the basis of his dream machine.

:yippee: Glad I was able to help with your decision making, and I think that Eagle will handle anything you ask of it. However eaglefreak will be around for your question, he's the expert.
    Have fun.

:yahoo: You SO read my mind! They are a bit on the expensive side and hearses ( unless they are pretty old ) have a LOT of fiberglass panels in them...
Last damn thing I need is a zombie with a ball bat and a fiberglass hearse....

Those are great points and I'm not trying to talk you out of anything, but just want to cover all the bases. I think we need to get together so you can see the size of the AMC Eagle. It's not exactly roomy inside and actually there is a lot of glass on a wagon.

The 258 in stock form is actually a bit anemic. It will do what needs to be done but with really high gears from the factory, unless you get one with the towing package, it definitely isn't a speed demon and you can't take advantage of the torque. I plan on installing an AW4 OD transmission from a Cherokee in my smaller Eagle with 3.55 gears, so I can take advantage of the torque of the engine and have OD to do better on the highway. My 86 with the 6 cylinder gets 16 mpg. My 87 with the 5.3L Chevy engine with over twice the horsepower and pushing 35" tires, gets 16 MPG. I have taken my 86 to places it shouldn't have been and it did just fine. I have installed a low range transfer case though.

They are a little rare in this area, but do come up for sale once and a while. I know of one in Lebanon, TN that may be for sale, that may need a transmission. I'll have to contact him if you are really interested. Honestly, a Jeep Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Chevy Blazer, Mitisubishi Montero, Isuzu Trooper, Toyota Fourrunner, Nissan Pathfinder or Exterra would be easier, have more cargo space, have more off road capable components and more aftermarket support, but you see what I choose to drive. :D

I would DEFINITELY like to see your car! Its seems that there is an awful lot of things being replaced and changed out on the Eagle, And if you say that there isnt much room inside then I might , indeed be better off using a truck with a SW mounted on the frame.
A close up view of the Eagle might confirm that BUT I want a station wagon body for sure!

Yep a lot of Jeep parts will fit. Check out some of the posts on The Nest

Lot of people have built strokers out of the 258s & (Mopar) Jeep 6 bangers. Cherokee parts are usually a good choice. Very close to Eagles.

You can always put guard grates over the windows on a wagon. Don't discount too many hearses. Even though there is fiber glass there is some pretty sturdy framework underneath and you can also replace the fibre glass with metal of some kind. I've got a book on professional vehicles that has some pretty illuminating facts. There also several other wagon models that would beautifully with your plans. You definitely have friend in me on this.
