So in 81x11's thread on the selling of his '79 Buick Electra, there was some talk about the rear-view mirrors...... My '81 Bonneville Safari has the 'sport' type mirrors - body-color painted plastic housing. Left mirror is a manual (cable) remote, with the joystick on the door. The right mirror is manual, although there was an optional manual remote for that side as well, with the joystick mounted in the center dash area. I would really like electric mirrors. Had them for so long on my other vehicles. These rally mirrors are also a bit small - can't even get the glass on the right one pushed out enough for my liking. Doing a bit of investigation, I found that the last of the rear-drive Fleetwood Broughams, in '85/86 or so had electric mirrors. Do you think this would be a fairly easy conversion?
Krash Long afo my buddy found chrome housing L+R power mirrors on a mid 80's full size Buick, Pontiac or Olds sedan, don't recall which. Definitely not a Chevy or Cad. Never noted them before that, or have seen them since, but really haven't gone to look. Would be a nice addition as they are better operating than most of the cable types. If the door shape ist the same, and most of the GM rear drive full sizes from that era were very close, these should be almost a bolt in. I do remember that removing the mirrors and harness was a bit of a prang tho. Sawsall would have been handy. Best, Tom
As was General Motors practice for many years, the front sedan/wagon doors are common to all the brands. If you can find the mirrors, they will fit the contours of your doors. Running the wires is a bit of a pain, but not impossible. A wire fish will be a huge help. The power mirror control will mount on the driver's door, where the current cable mount is for the one mirror, so you will have to fish the wires through both door jambs for the passenger mirror. More nuisance than anything else.
Good. That was the information I was hoping to get. Won't be doing this right away, but when I go 'yarding'............
I agree with Mike...but I believe that you will find that many of the power mirrors have two separate controls...mine does. My driver's mirror control is in the driver door armrest...and the passenger mirror control is in the center part of the dash...both are power/electric. I believe that the mirrors on such models as the Electra Estate Wagon may be similar...you might look back through some of the threads in the for-sale section to verify. You should check with 205 Auto Wrecking in NE Portland (on NE 105th/Sandy Blvd)...they specialize in GM's, so you've got a shot at finding something that might work...and close-by.
