Check the links on this site too:

The Hemi engines were in New Yorkers up to 1958, in different sizes, from 1955. You don't pass many gas stations per tankful, with those, except on long trips. :rofl2:

As far as I can recall, the 440 should be in your T&C. Before that it was a 383. A 400 came later than 1972.

The 400 was the standard engine for that time. As you already stated, the VIN tells it's a 400 and even the guy you bought it from and worked on the car, was 90% sure it was the original engine.
I asked him about the 440 story as well and he just registered it as he was told it was a 440 when he bought it.
On the identification, the 400 is a B block engine and the 440 a RB block, were B is a short deck and RB a tall deck engine.
The B block (400) has the cubic inches stamped on the right side of the block deck adjacent to the distributor. The RB block (440) has the engine size stamped on a pad on the left front of the engine adjacent to the front tappet rail.
I didn't check this when I went over the car.

Yup the "M" code designates it as a 400/2bl car, you can also check the fender tag and it should be E63.

As for identification by eye...look for a pad cast into the block at the top of the motor just to the right of the distributor (when standing in front of the motor)...if this raised pad is not there then you have a B block not a RB block.

Just had another thought pop into my head...if it still has a 2bbl carb on it then it has to be a 383/400 B-block. They never produced a factory 2bbl 440 in a passenger car to my knowledge...maybe in an industrial machine application though.

Speaking of dirt. You know there's a few on this forum that when dirt was created they were consulted on what color dirt should be. Right Norm?

I did chuckle when I saw his 'signature'. He just likes to get down and dirty.
