This Monaco wagon has been for sale in LA for several years. It looks pretty nice and is a fairly rare car, but the price is not realistic for an obscure model that is less than perfect. :162:

I still like this car! It may be a bit obscure, and the price is a little high, but it is also rare, and a very solid car to start with. All I can say is "Come on, lotto! Papa needs a wagon!"

Yup....been for sale for years by sellers that are not really sellers. I tried to get info from them a couple years back through one of their stupid ads and got stupid answers. The car is still sitting in the same place and they will not move it for better pix. They do have more pix but I don't know if they even have the car. When I talked to them they wanted ALL the money up front with no answers to my questions. I believe the ad to be a phony.

Here are some photos of the car when I spoke to the owner in 2007. At that time the wagon was in good condition, as seen by these photos. It appears to be a nice "California" car. But, due to the uniqueness of the wood grain DINOC, and the condition of it. It would be almost impossible to replace it in to original, unless NOS could be found. And what would 40 year old decals be like if not stored correctly. It is a great wagon, or at least it was at that time.
If I remember correctly it is a 440 powered car with a factory tow package option. Great color combination, and hide-away headlights.

Question for all you guys: Did all of these big wagons have the gas tanks on the outside of the frame rails, behind the quarter panel, or did any of them have tanks that were actually safe?

The Fuselage (69-73) C body Chrysler tanks were located right behind the driver's rear tire. I believe the other mopar wagons were there as well, but I haven't owned any of those yet.
In retrospect, I don't remember hearing of recalls on them for safety issues, unlike a Ford Pinto. Blow-outs on the rear tire could cause some issues though, if the tread came off the tire.
That is how these vehicles got their iconic rear-facing third seat, or their 'trunks' in the six passenger variety.

Any of you GM guys want to chime in, where was the tank on a clamshell wagon?

Tank on a clamshell is on the left side, outside the frame rail right behind the left rear tire. Pain in the a** to replace.

Thanks, guys. You just saved me a world of hurt! Guess I'll be looking for a wagon that has the tank in what I call a safe place. Having had a tire de-vulcanize on the highway, there is not a hope in HELL I will have a gas tank in the target zone. This could make for an interesting wagon hunt, now!

I can not ever recall having seen a burned-out Mopar wagon hulk in a junkyard, ever. I've owned six old Mopar wagons:

    1963 Dodge Custom 880
    1967 Ply Belvedere I
    1969 Ply Sub
    1970 Monaco
    1967 Dodge Polara
    1979 Chry T&C

Never had an issue with the gas tank placement. Too many things in life to get all paranoid about. Gas tank placement is not one of them.

I definitely agree! I have owned 3 Chrysler Wagons, and have had no issues. They are easy to replace the floats on, when they stop working. And as far as finding a wagon with a gas tank inside the frame rails, good luck with that. I will say, there is a nice 79 pinto wagon on eBay now. Just don't get rear-ended at a stop light. KABOOM!
