So this would be the Catalina based Safari since its a 400 car? AC compressor seems to be missing.

All looks good until the "will be needing a gas tank" comment. They're not reproduced for these cars, and the wagon tanks are different from the sedans and coupes, so the only source is another wagon just like it.

I'm wondering what all sins that newer paint is hiding. The left rocker, just in front of the rear wheel, has something wrong with it. The rest of the body lines just look not quite right to me. I have a feeling there may be quite a bit of hidden repair. Also, virtually all of the trim is off the car. If it is missing, that can be a difficult thing to find.

You are wrong. I have bought a new gas tank for the '71-'76 full sized GM wagons. They are available for around $250.

Where did you buy it, and when?

My suspicion is that there is no information to share. I'm guessing he bought this gas tank 15 or 20 years ago and whatever supplier might have had them then no longer has them. I could certainly be wrong, but I have looked high and low for gas tank and other station-wagon specific parts for the clamshell-era wagons, and I've always come up empty. (We're all, of course, familiar with the issue of rubber weatherstripping for the rear window.) Heck, forget about station wagons. It's not easy to find gas tanks for the full-size GM cars of that era, period.

And they both have free shipping. Seem to me like a pretty good deal for a new tank.

Those auctions are both mistaken. Especially the second one, which claims that the same tank fits both the four-door sedan and the wagon. The gas tank in these wagons is a more vertical affair that fits behind the driver's side rear fender. The filler neck attaches at the top, not along the long edge as shown in the photo. GM had to move the tank to the rear fender to make room for the disappearing tailgate. Anyone who claims the sedan/coupe gas tanks will fit the wagons doesn't know what he's talking about.

Besides, you still haven't told us where you bought your tank, and when.

It's been some time since I bought my tanks and don't recall where I got them, but I do know what they look like and those 2 on ebay are the correct tanks. I also have a few good used wagon tanks but would rather get a new, shiny one.

I've done more checking, and I think you're right. That ebay auction is still wrong, though, in claiming that the same tank fits both the sedan and the wagon. That is very not true.

Here's the wagon fuel tank for a '73:

    Big difference.
