Hello every one I have looked on the internet and have not found much on this. Does anyone know if you can replace the steel Transmission cooler lines with the rubber PCV hose?? Just a quick question thanks!
When I think PVC hose I think the clear stuff and I would say a definite no. When it gets hot it swells up huge and loses all strength. But for trans lines I use the black rubber fuel line hose with no problems. Even the cheap SAE30R7 should be fine, high pressures don't normally run thru a trans cooler. Just make sure to keep it tied up so it doesn't flop around and chafe.
I've used rubber line for years on tranny coolers. Just tell the cool lookin guy at the parts store what you want it for and he'll make sure you get the right rubber line. On my old motorhome I used the same heavy rubber lines for my two fuel tanks. I had left a slight loop section not wire tied down. Got half way to Florida on a hill and ran out of fuel. The loop looped and kinked. So, yes, tie it down good because on a tranny line you wouldn't know it is kinked till too late. Sometimes it's not good to get kinky!
Wagonman he is talking about PCV hose as in emission hose, not PVC, polyvinyl chloride. Yes, they make hose that is specifically for transmission coolers and most parts stores carry it. As mentioned, make sure it is not going to get rubbed by a moving component or near and exhaust manifold or pipe. I didn't have any trouble finding it on the net. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=transmission+cooler+hose
Most trans lines are reinforced rubber. They can handle more pressure and their are two lines coming from the trans. One is the pressure side and the other a return line. Like someone already said......most guys at the local parts house will point you to the right hose type.
Transmission-lines are marked "transmission" on the black rubber line. Fuel lines are marked as well.. Fuel lines are not compatabile with trans fluid for very long, you can cut fuel line easy with side cutters, but the transmission line will require a hack saw or a very strong hand using side cutters. I have seen fuel line separate when used as transmission line,, it swelled up like a balloon.
Most auxiliary transmission coolers come with the appropriate lines included in the kit. The lines from the transmission to the radiator are probably better done in metal since they have to follow a fairly specific routing. They aren't that hard to bend, anyway, and you can likely buy them with the correct fittings on the premade double flare ends already.
It's also possible to use metal lines for the long runs, using rubber at the ends as in adding fuel filters. Since the original lines rusted, it is possible to only replace the section that is rusted out with rubber. Flair the ends and use double clamps for safety.
If you plan on replacing them, I have used Summit Steel Braided for a long time. They will out last the car!!! http://www.summitracing.com/search/...mit-Racing-Stainless-Steel-Hose/?autoview=SKU
