The big Pontiac Slim Jim is much bigger than the F-85 trans, plus the bellhousing is very different.

Tell em Krash K. I owned many cars for years that I couldn't tell you what anythng under them looked like. As long as they ran there was no need to be climbing under them. That's what the grease monkeys at the old gas stations were for!

He said his was no T 400 - and the trans shop told him it was a slim jim. We don't know if it was original to the car as he bought it very very used. I'll have to ask him what the shift quandrant showed. Never thought to ask him that.

Haha, ok.....I was just joking anyway, didn't think you would possibly remember a detail like that; so to sum up our F-85's had the junior version of the Roto Hydramatic(slim jim) or Model 5. It was a 3 speed unit with "softer" gear changes than the later THM transmissions.

Maybe he had a car that was pieced together? A Slim Jim will not directly bolt to a Buick Nail Head. He most likely had a Dynaflow, but some people can not tell the older transmissions apart. I had a guy bring me a 57 Plymouth and tried to tell me that he had a Slim Jim.

It still had the original engine so you are likely correct. I know I'd not be able to tell the difference between one or the other.
