I was at a huge indoor classic car sales place years ago. There must have been a hundred or so inside a big building. Old 30s coupe street rods, muscle cars, tri five Chevies. The normal popular stuff. Across the building I could see a 1963 Ford Country Squire wagon,,,kinda teal color with the wood grain. I thought that it looked cool from where I was, but didn't really understand it being in with all the "others". When I finally got up close....it had been ordered with an XL package. Bucket seats, console, 390 4 barrel, 4 speed, AC, etc. I think it only had like 20 some K miles on it and was gorgeous. I was imagining the day it was ordered..husband,,,"I want a hot rod XL,,,wife,,,I want a wagon" So,,here might have been the compromise. Just speculating, but it was a fantastic wagon. I don't remember the price, but I think about it often.
Another one, in red - for sale: http://www.steeldreamz.com/1963_Ford_Country Squire_146303348.veh I love the '63 '500XL' interior. When I was a kid, my dad's best buddie bought a 2-door hardtop, in that teal color. Car was bitchin'.
My Dad had one of these XL wagons in the early 70's that he and my uncle put a Medium Riser 427/Toploader combo in. It was his daily driver as by that time there were 6 of us little ones. My Mom's car was a 65 Town Landau 'Bird with a 406/Tri-power. That wagon is the reason I love wagons to this day, and these 2 examples are just a sample of the cars I grew up with in the house. My Dad did'nt believe in buying new cars. We always had cars he built. Man, I love my parents!!!!!! Chuck
Wow,,that is a great wagon. My Courier paint is 12+ years old and showing some small issues. I have thought about a color change and putting the wood grain/trim on it. The wood (with certain color paint) makes the cars so rich looking,,,I love it.
