Our mercury is still standing on the ramp. Last week we got our parts from rockauto: Distributor Cap and Rotor Kit Calipers Wheel Cylinder Hydraulic Hoses Spark Plug Wire Set Spark Plugs Intake Manifold Gasket Steering Gear Rebuild Kit Differential Cover Gasket Ball Joints Stabilizer Bar Link Brake Shoes Axle Shaft Seal Wheel Bearings Lug Stud And from Summit a turbo muffler (one muffler from the wrecked blue merc can be reused, the whole customized (by Maarten) exhaust system can be reused but one muffler is damaged. Yes, this mercury needs more work than the blue one did. But the engine is running great and the transmission is shifting perfectly so all will be fine... The interior is like brandnew, even better than the wonderful interior of the blue merc. The car is very clean, no rust (even no rust at all on the roof where the roof rack is attached and no rust around the windows) except... the underneath... It looks like this car has always been garaged and very well cared for... but drove on a salty road a few times with an unprotected underneath which was cleaned too much. So we have to remove the rust and repaint the parts below the woodgrain. Also we will make the underneath clean and treat it with rust prevention stuff. The fuel tank is rusty, we will replace it by the tank of the blue merc. The underneath and bottom edges are not rusted through, mostly surface rust. Most challenging are the fuel lines, they are bad. We do not know how to fix that yet, we cannot find complete fuel lines so we have to do the fuel lines ourselves but we do not know how to handle the connectors yet. Any ideas? The woodgrain itself is in great condition except one door... But I know someone who can copy the print to a piece of vinyl. The bumpers, glass etc etc etc are in perfect condition. We removed the trim so we can remove the rust on the bottom edges... That differential fluid stinks... Even the plastics and rubber/weatherstripping is in great condition... but once again the bottom edges... We are optimistic, this car wil be like brandnew... but it needs a lot of hard work. But hey... probably no welding needed (no holes), not all woodgrain needs to be replaced, he is driving great... so it could be worse...
not sure what fittings your looking for but if its anything like a 5.0 mustang aftermarket has plenty of fittings. you can always run a s.s braided hose up to the front and then get an adapter from russel
That differential fluid stinks... ..the first time I ever smelled 90W gear oil, I thought the dinosaur was still decomposing...
as for the fuel lines luv? just go old school and replace them with rubber and hose clamps.....it worked for the first 80 years of cars nice to see her getting the once over tho
Hi Meulmani, Finally the car arrived at your home ! and you have the wood rear deflector !! you're lucky ! why not pick up the fuel lines from the blue cp ? you should check all the brake hoses especially under the driver floor ! Good luck for administratives...
The "old guy" has a valid point....................Rev's gona kill me! Congrats on getting it home, I'm sure it will be stunning when your done
I am sorry you haven't heard from us for a while. We have been very very busy. Not only with the car but also with the renovation of our farm/shed etc. And the cp needs more work than the blue one did: the rusty underneath and bottom edges, the bad lines and also more technical work to do. The car will not be ready before X-mas as planned, we will need one more month at least (one or two hours each evening except weekends). Yes, we can use some lines of the blue one, but not all of them, they are damaged by the accident. And yes, we have ordered rubber and hose clamps. Old lines and exhaust parts, the lines were so bad they broke immediately when bending: We can use most parts of the exhaust system of the blue one, which was tailormade by Maarten. But the bottom edges of the mercury are clean!!! We have cleaned the underneath and cleaned the edges with a wire brush. There was one spot which needed welding. To prevent the metal from rusting again we treated it with brunox: And then primered and painted: It is amazing how rusty the underneath and bottom edges were compared with the very clean rest of the car. The rest of the car (including the interior) is like brandnew. Unfortunately one door has got a dent which started to rust and the woodgrain is damaged there. But I know a guy who can fix the woodgrain, I hope you will have to look closely to see the difference between the old and new woodgrain, although it will never be exactly the same.
Hi, For the woodgrain, Maybe your ford dealer could sell some new, They probably won't know what you want, but with the original part number, i'm sure the can help you. I have some new original woodgrain in original ford box for spare, and the part number is : 1 E7MY 7420748A SERV SHEET 12-21 05/00 Very nice job you done, your Cp will be a brand new car
It's good to hear from you and to hear that the resto is coming along great, though not as fast as you would like but it will be worth it in the end. Great work. I love to see a wagon get the care and love it deserves and from what I see you care a lot. Keep up the good work. Look forward to seeing more as it comes along. Good luck!
That's interesting, thank you! If I google "E7MY 7420748A" I find a Russian site: http://usparts.ru/oem/?year=1989&ma...rd/GM&group=FRONT+DOOR&sub=Upper&ill=00200081
Beware of that Russian site, it always comes up on searches for any obscure part that nowhere else in the world has had for years, hard to believe. Why not just do the one side with new woodgrain so it all matches for color and grain continuity between the panels?, it should look like one long piece of wood. Stripeman has the vinyl and it looks pretty much like the original stuff. http://www.stripeman.com/mm5/mercha...ct_Code=579-Woodgrain-Decal&Category_Code=WGD
Yes, I think ordering from an obscure Russian site is a nit tricky so I won't, thanks for your advice. A lot of work has been done; the fuel lines, brake hoses, exhaust pipes, LPG system (petrol is very very expensive in the Netherlands), etc, etc etc. Some bodywork, coating of the underneath and other things has to be done. We hope to drive the merc off the ramp in a few weeks!! As soon as we are ready we will make pictures!
