its a 305. anything that you can do to a camaro you can do to a B Body!
personally id check craigslist and try to find a built 350 and drop it in. (just a more powerful start)

The sky is the limit as far as modifcations go. You have to remember that it's a 305 and figure what goal you are aiming for. I had a 305 in my wagon with a mild cam, intake and exhaust and it ran well and didn't perform bad for what it was. If you help the 305 breath better they are a good running engine. If you want more power and throttle response you should think about more cubic inches.

    What they said X3.

A previous owner dropped a stock LO5 (350 TBI) into my 91 Caprice.
It is a much better starting point than the 305.
BIG difference compared to the 305 cars I have driven.

-------All of the above plus an Edelbrock dual plane with Edelbrock 4-barrel. -Or a good 350 and go from there. More power? Does 454 sound good? :dancing:

I'm just going to throw this out there as an option and go a little bit against the grain. Vortec 5000. I believe they made about 220-230hp. They have the 305 Vortec heads and the SCPI. I think they made them 96-02 so you might be able to find a relatively low mileage engine for not much. It's not as straight forward as just throwing an engine in there (need wiring harness and controls and probably upgraded fuel pump), but I don't think it would be too bad. Anyway just an option to the standard 350. You have to be careful modifying the stock L03 due to the speed density system.

I used a Vortec 5700 crate short block from GM. Not sure if the 5000 is the same, but on the 5700 you HAVE to use an electric fuel pump. The old style fuel pump boss is there, it's just completely solid. I put a cover on mine anyway (just didn't have to use any gasket/maker) I also built the top with old school stuff (non-Vortec heads/carb) and have 0 computers, just like a reg. 350.

The big performance choke point on the L03 and L05 are the heads. You can do all $ort$ of performance mods to those engines, but you will never get the kind of performance you want with those heads.

I would say crate motor, or junk yard vortec out o a truck of a newer year.

Check out the Year One crate motor. I purchased one about 3 years ago and put in my '55. It is a .030 over late model 350 with the vortec heads. It dynoed 423 hp @ flywheel. While my '55 has a big plush interior and is a fairly heavy car but with that engine, 350 turbo tranny with a 2800 converter it is fun to drive even with the stock rear which I have to upgrade.Had a little too much Saturday fun one night so now I have a nice whine and slack in it  :biglaugh:
