Hi - I've searched around but not found too much on how to remove the wood trim on my 1966 Mercury Colony Park. Does anyone have some "how to" on that - or a link to a thread I missed when I searched? Most appreciated.

It ain't easy but guys have done it. Heat seems to be the best way but not TOO hot! Hair dryer is easiest and won't get too hot if you watch what you are doing. There may be tough spots where you would have to use 3M decal remover. I have not used that product but am told it works well. I have used 3M adhesive remover but it may require a long time to get that wood grain off. Biggest thing you will need is a lot of patience.:yup:

There are special "erasers" you can buy from a auto paint supply shop that go on a low speed polisher (1000 RPM) that will remove vinyl stripes and woodgrain without chemicals.

Ok, so another question. If I get new woodgrain, can I just apply it over the old - which would seem easier? Just ensuring there are no bumps, etc. Also, how about the strips - are they bolted on?

How long do you want it to last?

Then remove the old vinyl. To get the new woodgrain to last, the surface has to be clean of dirt, wax, oil, etc. How are you going to do that with the old cracking, oxidized woodgrain vinyl in place? Yeah, it's a lot of sweaty, dog-work, but most prep work is if you want to do it right.
