I was wondering what you all do for music in your older wagons...and if some of you use aftermarket setups..i did an aftermarket system on my Rambler Wag.......but i was wondering what you guys do...and what you think of my setup.....
    heres pics
    [IMG]
First i added a Kenwood detachable face-cd player with aux inputer under the dash
    [IMG]
i was able to get these 5 and 1/4 ich speakers behind the kick panels with no modifications
    [IMG]
i later disconnected the right side kick panel speaker in favor of ths 6 and 1/2 speaker in the custom doorpanel

Ok so there you have it.....i have two 6x9's in boxes in the rear in the cargo area in boxes......mounted where the cargo panels used to be.......will get pics in the morning i also have a large tweater mounted in the original single speaker's dash location...i was also wondering if it would be worth it to bring the right kick panel speaker back online via a 2 channel amp i have?just wondering..

My wagon had the original radio but I upgraded the speakers that required no modification.

In a 69 Rambler the task is obviously more difficult as it probably had only one speaker from the factory.

Many folks mount the new stereos in the glove box. As to speakers it really depends on what you are willing to cut in the back to mount them or build boxes for the 6x9s. I don't think there is a good way to keep the car looking original and install a new system.

I just finished a project in my '80 Volare wagon, actually.

It had only the mono dash speaker (and I mean only, the speaker holes in the tailgate didn't even have factory wiring) and an aftermarket cassette player. I pulled the old cassette player out and put in my Kenwood head unit. I pulled off the front door panels and hacked holes in the door frame big enough for 6.5" component Rockford Fosgates, having to snake wires from the rear of the interior into each door on my own. I installed 2 separate amps, 1 for the components and one for the 2x10" Rockford subs that I slipped behind the back seat in a sealed enclosure. The cool thing is that there were storage compartments on both sides in the back that hold the amps.

Suffice to say it went from a rattling mono speaker in the dash to a very nice and very loud theater! With the subs cranked my rear view mirror doesn't even rattle. Man, I looove old steel cars.

    I went with a Pioneer CD head unit , 2 tweeters , 4 - 6 1/2 's ( one in each door ) , 2 - 6 X 9 's ( behind the rear seat ) , 2 - 10 inch subs , and 2 Kicker amps ( under the rear floor ) . Nice for drowning out the road noise and Flowmaster 40's .

Does yours have a remote control? My Kenwood does and I still haven't figured out why but it does..:29:

You can just see it in the cubby forward of the shifter.

My thoughts were how silly is it to have remote control for an item not even at arms length until I bought a conversion van for traveling. It's quite handy while in the aft compartment.
On a sidenote; Which Kenwood do you guys have? I have an Excelon that has a failed display, I'm told this very common. It's older than a year, Kenwood says tough poop. I won't buy another.

Traditionally it's better to drive from the front seat:evilsmile:

    Just kidding.

I installed an Alpine with an iPod hook up in my 68 Sport Wagon. I mounted it under the dash, and tapped into some excisting wiring. I didn't want to drill any holes or modify anything since its a solid bone stock car.

I put 6.5's in boxes behind the front seat, and 6x9's in the back in boxes. It sounds just fine.

I can take some pics if anyone would like.

I have the eXcelon 592. Very happy with it and it works as it should. I just connect a 16GB flash card and have a huge library of music at all times.

X590 here. I was also pleased until the display went blooey. It still "works" but near impossible to operate without the display, once I enter a wrong command I'm sunk. It does sound nice. Hopefully yours will fare better.

Works fine for 3 years now. You probably just got a fluke. They happen no matter what brand. Radios are something that Kenwood happens to do pretty well. Did you contact them about the problem?
