I don't plan to change too much really. It's kind of a funny car to own, because it's "stock" the way it is and I don't want to mess that up, but on the other hand, it's a "made up" car that never really existed, so I can do anything I want... I was thinking that I'd like to find a dual-gate hurst shifter for it from a '79, and make it into a hurst/olds maybe. I also found a set of 17" wheels I really like, and may add those (though I wouldn't get rid of the factory 442 wheels - just change them for a while...). Other than that, there are a couple of small interior issues that need to be corrected, and we'll see what else comes up... I do sometimes wish I had a 3rd seat car (something from the 60's), but I really like this car and the fact that it has an interesting story...
Lightning rods? I've always been intrigued by them, but I'm guessing they are more style than substance. A friend of mine has a pristine '83 H/O Cutlass with them. Might be cooler than the dual gate shifter. Any rare/oddball options that were available that year that your car doesn't have?
Well, basically just the dual gate... The Lightening rods came out a little later... I found one dualgate setup, but it was $750 and I wasn't ready to drop that kind of $$$ on it... These are the 17" wheels I'm thinking about: I was thinking I would do the indented part of the spokes in gold to keep the Olds 442 style... Thoughts?
So here's the first purchase I made for my 442 - a new garage. Unfortunately, my garage was turned into a house for my Mom, and I'm garageless, but it's all good, and now I have this garage... My wife says it makes it look like a hearse...lol
Thanks - I like it a lot! I am continually amazed by the responses I get at car shows. A lot of car guys are knowledgable about the 60s and 70s, but when you get to the newer generation cars, there is a lot they don't know (I didn't either before I got this car). I'll sit beside the car and listen to guys argue about whether there was a 442 made in 1980, or whether there was a 442 wagon made... My favorite is when a guy tells me his father (uncle, brother, etc) had a 442 wagon exactly like this - same colors, etc... I just smile and say "Cool"...
Yeah, it probably had a "3/4 race cam" too! I never could figure out what the heck a 3/4 race cam was..........................it usually when along with some story about some car that would do 120mph in third gear... You know, that thing needs a 455. with aluminum heads and intake they weigh the same as a small block........... I've got a lot of big block Buick parts layin' around.........
Stock cams are 1/2 race. 3/4 race means you go 25% faster and use 50% more gas. Full race means you go twice as fast as stock and use 100% more gas. It's really a very simple system to understand.
There is, but it only goes 1/2-ast... A 455 with a 4-speed would be fun, but I'm happy with the 350 - at least for now... I like that it's "stock" for the car... Sort of...
442 Wagon is for sale!!! Say it ain't so!!! Yup, it's true... I'm putting my 442 Wagon up for sale. I would consider either a PT Cruiser or a 9-pass wagon in partial trade, but I am not looking for any project cars... I need some money for some needed work on my house, and unfortunately this is the only place I have to get it right now. I know I will regret this later, but... PM me if you have an interest, and I'll tell you everything there is to know about the car.
442, I am really surprised because I know how much you love your wagon. These economic times have got to stop. Just when you think they've bottomed out and maybe it's going to turn around, you find that 442wagon has to sell. One's wife, maybe I could understand, but your wagon?
