4 months since the last update and this is still at the top of the page?! Looks like I’m not the only one getting hit with delays and other priorities!!

As usual I don’t have much done but I’ll share progress and plans. Got the carpet in, fits well and seems to be pretty well made. I did go with the mass backing which is 40mil thick rubber so I opted to use the sound deadener I had laying around on the roof, doors, and the cargo area. Speaking of cargo area, of course there is no carpet kit available anywhere so it was time to improvise again. I just bought a plain black house rug. Since it is nylon (plastic) it was pretty easy to heat and form in a couple spots and hit the spots I cut with heat again to keep it from fraying. The door panels are all ready and waiting for some simple upholstery, I needed new rear armrests and there’s three styles available all with different mounting points so I had to wait to see which I wanted (I got the cheapest ones, because broke life). The simple upholstery I mentioned will be the material in the foreground of the pic, there’s a plaid and a plain black. The craft store was having a killer sale and the sales girl used a coupon as well. Ended up getting 20yds of fleece and 5yds of foam for like $71. The plan was black for the panels and plaid for the seats but I have since talked myself into using a combination and making patterns. But seeing as how I don’t even have a sewing machine…we’ll see what happens. And seat belts! I got some. Went with the aircraft style latches, just like em more.

Doing what I can as time allows. I was going to sew the materials together to make a nice design but decided to keep it simple. Door panels and seats will be plaid and the headliner will be black. Got the panels done with some foam to give it a little cushion and extra insulation. The carb I got is manual choke so I got a cable and mounted it using a scrap piece of metal. And I think I finally got the throttle linkage figured out (note the massive amount of adjustment holes).

lol. I guess on a Country Squire I may have used a different word, but on a Falcon, I always viewed them as cute models, so that was my first thought. I was always fond of the plaid interiors Ford offered on its 1970-72 Full size wagons. I guess Mercury and Ford also made it available on Montego, and Torino wagons about the same time, and extremely rare option, so your Falcon will be in good company.

Getting started on the exhaust, how exhausting (rim shot please). Tried a couple different factory manifolds and they just kept fitting worse. I already had tubing laying around, let’s make a snake!

First 16” or so. 7* cut off the fitting, a couple rotated 45* elbows, a 15* pie cut, small extension, and a 90*. This should be the hardest part.

This is the amount of room I (don’t) have to the shift lever off the steering column. Oh yeah, I’ll post that as well, more previous owner issues.

Here you can see where the exhaust was resting, right on the fuel line, nice.

 

Another fun find from a previous owner. Somewhere along the line the shift arm was bent and welded in a weird position so I got to remove and disassemble the entire steering column to repair it.

 

More exhaust porn. Made a 2” H-pipe dual exhaust setup (not shown are the Dynomax super turbo mufflers), should be ample for the stock 302. Eventually I’ll finish it with rear exits but for now it’ll just have turn downs before the axle. Also made another bracket from scrap square stock, I love my brackets. Holds the kickdown cable and a throttle return spring (also not shown is a second spring on the carb for safety). Anyway, another step closer.

 

Another update and another specialty tool learned. The tool this time is a sewing machine, not the first thing to come to mind for most people. Re-covering the seats now. Rear bench is done, as is half the front bench. Still need to do a little foam repair on the bottom portion. Anyway, blah blah pics…

Update time. The good, the bad, and the not as ugly. The goal was to have it drive under its own power before the end of the year, and I was able to do a few shake-down runs around the neighborhood!! Nevermind the fact that was last years goal as well LOL. I finally narrowed down the trans leak to in between the bell housing and the case so another first for me, I got to drop the trans. Or as I call it, mystery box of gears and black magic. While I was working up the courage to do that though I decided to see if one could indeed polish a turd. Yes, and it looks like it’ll polish out quite nicely.

The whole car looks better but that light green really came to life! More pics to come after a couple more rounds with the buffer.
