I got Amazon brand deadener. Seems to get some real good reviews for a fraction of the name brand stuff. But now that I’m looking at carpet it looks like I can get a heavy duty rubber type material on the backing for an extra $80, I’ll have to research to see what’s better.
I went with a heavy duty fiber style barrier when I re-did the carpet in the Fury. http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/threads/travels-of-the-fury.46361/page-15 Having driven it for a while now, I have to say I am less than impressed. I really wish I would have gone with the dynamat/kilmat variant. When I get ready to do the carpet in my next project, that's the route I am going to go.
What exactly didn’t you like about the fiber style? Just not as dense of a barrier for heat and noise? Looks good either way, you guys did a fine job. I imagine it’s better than nothing but I’m sure Dynamat or similar would be way more of a solid choice. From the website I’m looking at: $80 for entire floor coverage, that’s about what a separate sound deadener would cost so I’m thinking it’s not a bad deal.
Yes, it looked good. To be fair I am sure it is providing some benefit. I have been disappointed with the lack of sound deadening. The car was noisy before, but that was attributed to the fact that it's almost 60 years old, only had carpet and all of the weather-stripping and such was shot. After all of the new material, it's still almost as loud. I have spoken with a number of folks who have done the other style of insulation and they claim that it made a world of difference. I don't plan to redo the Fury. It is, as they say, what it is. Lessons learned for the next project.
I’ve been pretty transparent that this is a learning car for me. Some things I learn to do and some things not to do. One rushed mistake I made was to rattle can some interior trim gray because I didn’t like the Ivy Gold and thought I’d change the entire interior color without having any vision. Well I’ve since changed my mind. The carpet, seats, and other bits will be black but the Ivy Gold will (would have) tie in nicely with the exterior. So, the worn paint would have been perfect but what’s done is done so let’s move on. I’m not getting it custom painted and I’m not paying crazy prices for factory patching spray paint. What I will do is get a close enough color that blends well and won’t break the bank. If you even need a “close enough” match then I suggest you visit your local graffiti shop, yes, graffiti shop. Some have a wall of colors that almost encompass the entire spectrum, and yes this is some quality paint. Worth a look anyway. Got the carpet samples in the mail. Top to bottom is Nylon Loop, 80/20 Loop, and Pile. Pretty sure Nylon would be closest to original but I’m not doing a restoration, I’m doing whatever I want, and I’m not really digging the Nylon or the Pile. The 80/20 seems like a good candidate.
Still here, still working on the wagon in 20min increments here and there throughout the week. Let’s see here, got the engine fired back up. That’s a big motivation booster. Replaced the gauge cluster voltage regulator and swapped bulbs with LEDs. Got the carpet but haven’t taken it out of the box yet (I should at least open it to make sure it’s correct). Decided to make my own door panels. Got a 4x8 sheet of 1/8 abs. To make the pattern I used 4mil moisture barrier sheet bought at the hardware store. After I transfer the pattern I can reuse it as the actual moisture barrier. Rough cut the ABS just to see how it’ll look. I plan on covering it with material eventually but it really doesn’t look half bad raw. Here’s a side by side of the panel that was on the car (warped, shrunk, ripped, ragged) and the 1/8” abs. . That’s about it for now. Major parts done, now it’s on to all the medium projects.
I *love* the LED replacement units. They're cooler, while brighter, and pull a lot less amperage. They also make the color, from the lenses, pop!
Holes drilled, refined the shape, and rounded the corners. This stuff is so easy to work with. Still need to secure those mounting clips but you get the idea.
Do you have a link for the LEDs you bought? I'm thinking 63 and 65 used the same and I love to replace mine.
