Hello, my name is Rick and new to the forum. I have started the restoration on my '55 Safari and have some questions. My Safari needs floors in the passenger and cargo compartments. Can I use the floors from a 1955-1956 Pontiac 2 door coupe and/or a 2 door wagon? I am also told the floor and braces (sold as one piece) from a 1955 Nomad can be used BUT with a lot of money and labor. Is that true? Any help, answers and advise is greatly appreciated.
The member that might be able to answer your question is jmt455, who restored a '58 Caballero. Anyway, welcome to the forum, and of course any and all pics are welcome!
to the wagon train, Rick! I don't have your answers, but I'm sure that someone here will. I'm always happy to see some love for the "not-chevy" 55-57's. We love to see project evolution photos, so post away!!
Glad to hear another Safari is being saved. On my 57 Safari I used Nomad floor pans but I was also wanting to remove the floor heater, which the Nomad did not have. I believe the two door sedan and wagon floors would fit, they are the same 122" wheelbase and frame. If you have access to them grab a tape measure and compare. If you intend to use the original underseat heater that would be the better option. Nomad carpet fits the Safari as the body shells are the same but the frames are different, I can't tell you exactly where, other than if I remember correctly the wheelbase for the Nomad is 7" shorter, but I believe that's from the firewall forward. It's been a very long time since I did my front floor pans the second time after an attempt to build my own turned out to be too ugly to leave in place (1980 and redo in 1981) and I've had several strokes thus my memory comes and goes so some details are hard to find at times. The doors, tail and lift gates and all glass, and window mechanisms are all shared with Nomad. Good luck with your restoration. Mine was too damaged in an accident prior to my purchasing it, I bought it as a wreck, so it has 1976 Trans am front clip from the firewall forward, 455 engine and 700R4 trans, and I still have the original button tufted interior done in the sixties in the attic but have replaced that with a later model interior front to back.
