Just an FYI. I found a Holley spreadbore carb that is a "fit like the original Quadrajet". "All necessary vacuum ports so they install and fit just like a Q-jet with no adapters required." Summit catalog # 4175 non emmissions - Holley # HLY-0-80555C # 4165 emmissions provisions - Holley # HLY-0-6210
Yes! Holley builds it for direct replacement. Same front and rear float bowls as in other Holley carbs but the same spread bore base as the Q-Jet. Holley isn't everyones cup of tea but I think they are less trouble and better performing then the Q-Jet. JMHO of course!
Boy oh boy Blackfoot, you must be trying for my best friend slot. We seem to be agreeing on everything lately haha.
If you know someone that can properly rebuild a Quadrajet carburetor, it will perform like new. Most of the problems with the Quadrajet carbs are the floats. I was told that new floats are still available, and when you replace the defective float, they work fine. As with most anything, if you don't understand how it works, and don't have the ability to repair it, you think of it as a worthless piece of garbage. Both my 1969 and my 1978 have the Quadrajet carbs, and they both work well.
My 79 and 87 both have Q-Jets, the 79's alright and the 87's the best Carb i've ever had, hands down.
On a carbed motor, I will only ever run a Q-Jet. They are the most economical for putting around and when you open them up, its like the roar of the gods. I have never had a single problem running any QJet carb and I am and always will be a GM man. I have the 3 best mechanics in the world if I can not get it tuned, my pops or my 2 older brothers. I read an article several years back where they compared the most popular carbs. Holley, Edelbrock, QJet and Street Demon. The QJet put out the most power and torque of them all, the only bad thing they had to say about it was the eratic fuel and CFM flow when the secondaries opened up. Once the motor caught up to the drastic change in fuel and air flow, there was a significant gain in both HP and TQ across the board. The 2nd place was Edelbrock, 3rd was Street Demon and as always Holley fell way short of the rest. I wouldn't hit my ex-wife in the ass with a holley.
Most of the quadrajunk, quadrapuke etc. comments are just a lack of understanding how to set it up properly.
I agree. The quadrajet is the best carb for the application. Just remember to fix the plug leaks as someone else already said. The quadrajet is a very high quality carb and when it's "tuned" right will serve for many years trouble free. I hate Holley. It's no wonder they are in bankruptcy....AGAIN! Anything Edlebrock is better than anything Holley IMO.
