The Michigan Theater in Detroit, converted into a Parking Structure and still in use.

The theater converted to a parking garage has always astonished me. I'm glad they didn't tear it down, but it seems like such a waste of what was once an amazing place. Perhaps it too will be restored one day.

I just saw a video on the restoration of the terminal. I was a little worried that FORD was going to gut the place and modernize it. On the contrary it sounds like they are painstakingly restoring it.
Of course I can't find the specific video, but this one does tell about the plans:

I'm glad that someone is finally doing right by this historical landmark.

The only reason they didn't tear it down was it is 1/3 of a larger structure that still is an active commercial Building, the theater is only the left side of the building, they looked into tearing just it down, but it would have compromised the structure of the remaining building. So after letting it sit vacant for 10 years, the decision was made to convert it into a parking garage and have it start earning $$$ again. They also rent the spaces in the theater's parking lot. As it is located within walking distance of the stadiums that house all 4 Detroit Sports teams, I am sure it is a money making lot.
