Time has not been kind to Umatilla, Oregon.

Top photo looks to be around 1956 or 1957, judging by the cars.
Bottom photo is November, 2015.

I think Umatilla is having a hard time because the main highway in the area, Route 84, which goes east/west mostly along side the Columbia river, no longer goes through the town. Some years ago, it bypassed the town to the south.

 

That's the story of all small towns that used to be on the US Highway system, then fell by the wayside as the Interstate system bypassed them all. Funny as the movie was, that's the sad back story to Pixar's Cars movie, how a town was slowly dying because the interstate totally bypassed the town. In reality, several towns on Route 66 were left behind in the dust by miles.

On my Bucket List. Mom and Dad used to go up there to get their wares, and since I was a baby at the time, I have zero recollection of it. Actually, it's twofold on this Bucket List item: the fudge, and a full-course Maine lobster dinner.
