They're being mean to you, because you live "out in the middle of nowhere". But not THAT mean, that's the price at some of the stations next to freeways in the LA area...Not that it's a quick easy drive either way,but I'm willing to bet, gas is cheaper in Las Vegas and Taft/Maricopa.

Here in the USA,unless you're buying racing gasoline, the highest octane gas you can get is 91.Several stations nearby, sell the racing gasoline,101 octane, but at varying prices.Between $8 and $11...

California has "regional pricing". Ridgecrest has a high number of well paid government employees who can afford to pay more! Same for San Francisco etc.

Our 100 octane fuel is less than $4 per gallon localy and Diesel is $2.65.

The biggest fluctuations in the LA area seem to deal with how close the station is to the freeway. The closer to the freeway, the more expensive the gas and the cheaper the diesel. The farther away from the freeway, the cheaper the gas, the more expensive the diesel...The regional thing is why I mentioned Vegas and Maricopa...Vegas doesn't want you spending all your money on gas, they want you losing it in the casinos,so the price is lower there.Especially compared to California gas, which comes with all sorts of extra tax...Taft/Maricopa is part of the Bakersfield Oil Reserve.Gotta keep the price low for the oil workers and their families.

Down here the 'high performance' engines will not run properly unless it's 98 octane?
We are using the Chev engines in the GMH V8's...what would be different to those used in the US, to require the use of 98octane?
    If I run the 5.7ltr (350) on say 95octane I lose about 120km per tank. If I use anything with ethanol I lose about 160 to 180km per tank. (160km = 100miles).

I'm not sure what the differences would be...I know when Pontiac recently had GTO's that were Holdens in disguise, the advertisements were;that with 87 octane you would get 215 hp,with 89 you'd get 225 hp and with 91 you'd get 235 hp...Something like that...There's a big push here to add more ethanol to American gasoline. There are some cars made specifically for an 85 octane ethanol gas.And yes,the mileage goes down when you add more ethanol. It takes way more alcohol to run an engine than it does gasoline. And more octane makes it run better.

    I don't understand it all?
The standard 5.7ltr as the GTO would have had, is the same engine as in mine. (Not the new one that's at 6.3ltr)
Standard these produce 248bhp at the wheels using 98oct. I was getting about 13.5 to 14litres/ per 100km travelled. (Sorry I'll have to work on the conversion to miles per gallon:D)
However, I had the Chev mafless tune done a set of quality extractors put on and the auto trans tuned and the result was better fuel economy with a good gain in power. Approx 304hp at the wheels and 9.5 to 10.5litres/100km.
As far as the ethanol blends, currently ours are at a maximum 10% ethanol, the price is up to 10cents per litre cheaper. But after some math, the loss of mileage when using ethanol averages to about 20%.......shouldn't the price at the pump be 20% cheaper than regular?? But that may just be my twisted common sense:evilsmile:

I was told about it some years ago on the AussieV8 forums, I really did not believe it and took some convincing.
I suppose the last time I built a car was over 20years ago, and we used a 350chev at the time. I seem to recall that we did alot of work on that old motor to achive similar results? If you wish, I can try and find the paperwork and give more detail on what was done.

And just when we thought we'd heard it all......our state government (Queensland) has announced they can no longer offer the 8cents a litre reduced fuel levy. So there's another price rise:banghead3:............but wait there's more.

With the 8cents reduced levy we did of course pay the highest vehicle registration & mandatory insurance in the country.

So a discount is due right?:).........................wrong :cry:as we are going broke down here (as well) they are going to increase it up to 40%!! :( :cry::cry:

Since this thread started, about a week ago,the price of gas in the LA area has risen thirty cents a gallon.Regular that WAS $2.49 qnd $2.59 is now $2.79 and $2.89. Premium is up over $3.00. One---ONE news report on TV mentioned that while he is in Saudi Arabia,Obama will be TALKING about high gas prices. What becomes of this talking, remains to be seen.
