sticking to the car in the ad

I'm not going to comment on the debate raging along, other than to say,E-Bay is a lot like CarBuys magazines at the gas station.even the glossier ones at the supermarket. You don't buy cars by looking at the photographs, you buy cars by looking at the cars. For me,that means shopping for cars here in SoCal.Cars in Chicago are out of the question until after I've won the Lotto or broken into showbiz big time...This looks to be a transition year car. It's still big,but trimmed down. For me,it lacks the Oldsmobile character of the earlier 70's---and quite hasn't gotten to the "best looking GM wagon" look of the mid-80's.I'd probably pass on it,merely because it just doesn't look right,to me.

I'm being pretty realistic at 150. I've been collecting, buying, selling and parting cars since I got married back in 1974. Don't know how many could have been considered collector cars back then but certain cars like my '63 thru '65 Rivieras were very collectible even back then and I went thru 14 or 15 of those alone. I've got a list that i was keeping here somewhere. If I can dig it up, I'd be happy to post it.

Yup. If I can't squeeze the charmin, I ain't buyin'.

My old law prof gave a great class on Advertising. In Law, it's called 'Invitation To Treat'. The rest is the meat and taters, the nitty gritty.

Besides that, I don't even trust my own bank, hydro or phone company to let them take their pound of flesh electronically. Too many expensive and immature learning curves still. In God We Trust, we all pay cash. The one-payment plan. My slogan since I cut up my cards over 9 years ago.

I'm French, my wife's Mexican. I'm a touchy-feely kinda guy. Bugs the heck out of her too. Lots to explore... :rofl2: But she's so pleased with the car, that even she pets the dash and talks to the wagon. Too bad its not a Cougar Wagon, they'd get along even better. :rofl2:

E-bay and other on-line listings allow a much different experience for the buyer than what was available just a few years ago. You can now 'specify' exact options and color on a used car, and have a pretty good chance of finding exactly what you are looking for (talking about a common late-model used vehicle here).

The downside is convenience. You have to be willing to buy the car sight unseen, or go to the expense and inconvenience of hiring an inspector.

Probably a middle ground for most would be to limit your search to the distance you are willing to travel.

You may also have to adjust your search range in order to get enough of a sampling to pick from.

I haven't bought a vehicle from an E-bay listing yet, but I'll do my homework beforehand for sure.

Yup. I will not send front money. I go look and if it is as represented I'll pay. If not I'll walk. Some ads say $200 or $500 by PayPal immediately at auction end. Yeah...right. If you refuse to send the money but tell the guy you will be there in 2 or 3 days and he says no....well...you pretty much know what the car's going to look like.

LOL....that's a pretty common discrepancy, I would say. Glad the car turned out alright in the end.

He's transforming it. New engine, new head, new torque converter...

Body-wise, he got a rust-free wagon. Can't wait until he takes some pics. Gonna be a winner.:thumbs2:

Just need some warm weather, but I'm going to take my time and try to clean and prep everything. Engine bay is kind of grundgy. I'd like to replace the dash, but have to find another. The one in the other Fairmont is good, but I don't want to paint it. Got some buckets from a stang to reupholster. Carpet. 8.8 rear from a stang. New control arms, shocks, 2bbl carb, and the list goes on...

Mother Nature is smiling on us, starting tomorrow. I'm doing the carb replacement today. A bit cool, but no wind.

The SWMBO was just giving me my marching orders for a BBQ tomorrow. Nummers... :thumbs2:

I am officially changing the rating on this deal to a 4. I think I was lied to about using or burning oil. I had the valve cover gaskets replaced before the car even got to my house, and after having here for a month or so, my nice clean driveway looks like a JiffyLube floor. DOES NOT LEAK OR BURN OIL was hardly true. Oh and the A/C compressor died yesterday, another $600. Funny how sellers differ. I still talk to Joe's widow on a regular basis 3 years after the sale, and never hear a word from others.

    Live and learn.

I described this car as I saw it. There was NEVER a drop of oil anywhere on my driveway or garage floor. This car was NOT driven on an everyday basis prior to your purchase so it's more than likely that since you have pressed it into daily service some things, unknown to me, have become evident.

This car was well described as a 33 year old, 106,000 mile car and not a new car. I offered the right to any bidder to come and inspect it or have any one of a number of national inspection companies to come and inspect it before bidding. Truth be told that you never made contact by either phone or email until the auction had ended. If you were so concerned about every little detail, perhaps you would have done so.

Let me quote the terms that were listed in my item description. Anyone that wants to revisit this auction can do so by searching this ebay number 140308819199

    "
When bidding, please remember that this is a 33 year old car and one might notice some minor things not seen or mentioned once you have seen the car.

CAR IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION BY APPOINTMENT AND IS STORED IN CHICAGO NEAR OHARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. There are many inspection services available and I highly advise serious bidders to use one or inspect the car themselves before bidding as again, ALL SALES ARE FINAL.
I have many more pictures of this car and additional pictures are available upon request. Any questions ? Please ask via email or feel free to call Rich at XXX-XXX-XXXX between 9 AM and 9 Pm CST.

Seller offers no warranty or guarantees. Car is sold “AS-IS and WHERE-IS”. All sales are final. "
It seems to me that you have a clear cut case of buyer's remorse for your own reasons. You can rate my description any way you want to, however, my terms and your rights were clearly spelled out. Hindsight is always 80/80.
