    More than 1,000 persons gathered in Adamsville, Tenn. Saturday, Aug. 24, 1974, to pay their last respects to legendary former sheriff Buford Pusser but few of them wore black. It wasn’t that kind of funeral. The streets were lined with American flags displayed in his honor and outside the Church of Christ people stood for more than an hour before the services with folded arms talking in hushed voice. Cars drove slowly by the church, with occupants hoping for a glimpse of the $6,000 casket which carried the famous former sheriff who was killed early Wednesday in a car crash just six miles from where he was buried. Among the guests were Tammy Wynette and Joe Don Baker, the Hollywood actor who played Pusser in the first "Walking Tall" movie.
