I was just sitting here going through some of the new post's and then it hit me. So, I just have to ask... are there any "visually challenged" wagons on this site? If so, I would LOVE to see them. Since I can remember, I ALWAYS had to have my car, truck, motorcycle looking top notch. I get sick thinking about the money I sunk into all of them and they would NOT leave my garage until it was "show" ready. I'm older now and really not into the show and shine any more(for myself). My wagon some would call a rat rod, and thats perfectly fine with me. I still ride with my arm hang'in out the window and a smile on my face, while I cruise the streets. And I wouldn't change a thing.
Almost all original 1977 paint. The tailgate was replaced and repainted at some time, and the woodgrain was (mostly) removed and the area painted brown by the previous owner. At 135,000 miles, The only rust is a couple of pinholes below the left rear side window. One of these days I'll fix them, strip the chrome, and send it to the paint shop, but I'm getting to like the blue suede look. People stop me at gas stations, you know the drill....
I'd say the wagons we all own run the gamut from show condition to 'not so much'..... Mine is probably closer the the latter rather than the former. I've never been one to spend a whole weekend detailing my vehicle. Heck, it doesn't even get washed every week. That being said, it doesn't look like I live in it either - like my daughter's Focus. Marshall
Mine looks pretty spiffy, but close inspection reveals a few flaws and blemishes. The worst places, to me at least are the headliner and the rear bumper plastic. Far from show quality, but I'd love to display it someday in a non judged show.
Mine are drivers. They get used and abused. Not hidden in a garage, dusted off and tip toed to a car show and then back into car jail, I mean the garage. Last month I drove 3,800 miles round trip to Utah and back with my 86 Eagle.
My 80 Catalina is a 131,000 mile survivor car. When I got it earlier this year, everything under the hood was original except for the alternator. It has zero rust, but the original lacquer paint is failing fast since I don't keep it in a garage. I went thru the top end and put a cam/lifters, fuel pump, water pump, timing chain, radiator, and replaced all the hoses including fuel and PS. I hope to repaint it myself later this summer or fall, because I can and have all the required tools. Otherwise it will look like a rat rod by next year.
I will work on both cosmetic and mechanical bits but often the mechanical needs a lot more attention than the looks. Still might be awhile until I have another wagon but when I do I'll do as I've always done and focus on the function before the form. I buy cars to drive them, not wipe them with a diaper in a climate controlled clean room facility.
My car is definitely a garage queen, for the most part kept spotlessly clean, but right now covered with dust and lacking any sort of interior. Don't get me wrong though I drive this car, on nice sunny days she gets some exercise for sure.
I think BlackBird DEFINITELY qualifies under the visually challenged, Still not on the road yet. Getting closer, got it inspected & IT PASSED!! Went to the DMV to register it & they said I need a bill of sale. Something about the title??? If y'all feel brave, here's the album. I do have a carpet, just hafta put it in. One of the MANY things i need to do this summer. https://www.facebook.com/ajax/photos/album/share_dialog.php?aid=484583701598827
I even show my car like this. I let people sit in it. I alter the signs to say "Please Touch". It's an interactive exhibit.
