Never heard of this one, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_pickle From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search A glass Christmas pickle The Christmas pickle is a Christmas tradition in the United States. A decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden on a Christmas tree, with the finder receiving either a reward or good fortune for the following year. There are a number of different origin stories attributed to the tradition, but it was primarily thought to have originated in Germany. This has since been disproved and is now thought to be an American tradition from the late 19th century.
Ah, an ornament looking like a dill pickle. I was thinking that anyone with any sense of smell at all could find a dill pickle pretty easily. I was unaware of this tradition. Must be related to the traditional Easter Poblano Chili Pepper. mike
The tradition was to hide a real pickle................ The phony pickle came later like other plastic and glass ornaments. However, my brother's wife is German, knew many German friends, and never ever have I heard such a silly pickle sucking thing! I have heard a saying called "I'm in a pickle now." Roughly translated meaning in trouble, or confused. And this is sort of a pickle! Epcot is one of those separate amusement park themed places at Disney Land and Disney World places. The one here in Florida is famous for that large glass looking golf ball with the two roller coasters inside.
When we were kids my mom made Christmas pudding and she would hide coins in it. I think it was supposed to be lucky if you found one in your serving. I suppose these days parents would have to hide a debit card.
I remember dimes and quarters wrapaed in foil, in birthday cakes... that was a blast......$0.10cents would buy enouph penny candy to have a sugar high for a week! As for hiding a debit card in a X-Mas tree, for the kids.......just ain't gona happen!....where is the pickled herring!??
