Julie and I recently returned from a 4 week vacation in the Baltic and the UK. We had a few minutes (about 50, to be exact) before we had to board the ship in Goteborg, so we dashed through the Volvo museum. The museum was much larger than I realized; lots of cars, trucks and aerospace displays, along with many of Volvo's concept vehicles. Nice store, too! Here are some pics... First, here I am with a "hurry up and take the darn picture!" pose... The museum is laid out in chronological order, following the company's history. this was (I believe) a 1935 or 36 sedan: 1962 "Amazon" Estate: Can't remember the Model, but I loved the crankshaft fence posts: Cute little "66": 940 Estate: This looks like it could have been fun; it's a 1995 480ES: Display board for the "Rocket" concept: Front view of the "Rocket": And the rear...I liked it: ACC concept vehicle: This Safety Concept Car has an on-board heart sensor that enabled the car to warn you if someone was in the vehicle as you approached: This is the "Jakob" hot rod, built in 2008. It's a tribute to Volvo's first production vehicle which was introduced in 1927. Not a wagon, but still worthy of a few pics: Cool drop axle with very interesting perimeter disc brake rotor design: Lots of carbon fiber on this baby: More about this car here: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/28/hot-rod-jakob-a-stunning-tribute-to-first-volvo/ Last, but not least; my favorite Volvo: Glad we visited! Hope you enjoyed the pics.
Stefan, I can't remember if there were any 850 wagons. Our visit was brief; we didn't even get to the truck, marine or special safety exhibits.
Amazon and P1800 wagons.. man I love those. Great to see them in a museum in that kind of condition. Any way to sneak them out? Ha!
Oh these pics are GREAT! Even though I'm a Texas boy, I went through high school in New Jersey and old Volvo's were everywhere up there in the late 80's. I remember the Amazon-style wagons and sedans, as well as the late 240-based models. I was not a big fan of them then, thought they were pretty homely, but respected the fact that most other cars the same age were all full of rust, but the old Volvo's seemed to resist the salt up there much better than 90% of the other cars then, and the shear number still on the road spoke to their reliability. That said, I've always been a fan of the P1800s, especially the wagons. I actually like the stock rear end better than the custom job above. Coupe or wagon, they were neat. There is a recent Wheeler Dealer program on Velocity where they fix up a white P1800 coupe. Catch it if you can! Thanks for posting! -Mike
awesome, glad you and your honey had a great trip! I've never seen this...or even imagined it! Could you imagine the eye's as you rolled up to a car show with this??
apparently...we share an affinity.. love Voovoo wagons !!!! man...what i would do for that Rocket thanx for the pics
OK...I have ALWAYS loved the 1800ES wagon and I think the Volvo marketing department was wrong....I think that Rocket would have sold like hot cakes. I LOVE that car!!
i had a volvo 740gle wagon, what a work horse, i got 485,000 miles out of it ,and it still drove great, surprised a lot of smaller more nimble cars too, would lift its skirts when asked to, in the end a fadeing clutch, and leeking head gasket was just not worth the cost of repairs,
