Worked on finishing up the left side yesterday.. moving onto the tailgate where I have a couple areas (both lower corners) that need some attention.

The wagon is looking great 73Super! What is with those tailgates lower corners? I had the same problem when I painted mine too. Must be a collection point for moisture. Love the body style on your wagon, the vents in the front fenders are so cool!

Yeah.. those are collection points for moisture.. no place for the water to drain properly. I'm going to see if there's anything I can do about that.. if not I'll por-15'em real good before welding them up.

I like those vents too.. you can get chrome caps for each of them.. but don't know if maybe that would be a little too much "bling" for the front end. Ha!

    Sway bars on the Bonneville

Got the 1.25" front and the standard rear bar mounted a few days ago. Definitely corners a lot better than it did before.

Next comes the quick ratio steering gear.

I have been working on my wagons brakes, I had all the drums turned, new wheel cylinders installed, cleaned inside and outsides of all my brake lines, replaced all the rubber hoses, and am waiting for my dual 8 inch booster, so I can plumb in my new dual master cylinder. Getting closer to being road worthy.

The aluminum wheels on my '94 Buick Century wagon were looking pretty dull so I tried to shine up the clear coat with no luck. I decided to just remove the clear to get to the oxidized aluminum. First pic is a before, second is after three applications of stripper, and the third (a different wheel, but they were all in similar shape) after removing the stripper and giving it a quick polish with compound to see the potential. I'll spend more time and effort to clean them up better including trimming the clear coat edges where they wrap around to the tires.

Decided to tackle the wheels on my '94 Buick Century wagon. They were looking dull and splotchy and my attempts at polishing up the clearcoat did virtually nothing to improve the appearance. It seems the aluminum underneath had oxidized and I would need to get to it to achieve any success. First, I needed to remove the hefty accumulation of caked on brake dust. I tried a name brand wheel cleaner and it didn't take off much at all. Rather than risk another possible failure on a stronger acid based product I decided to just make my own by mixing one part hydrochloric (a.k.a. muriatic) acid to two parts water and it worked great. The results can be seen in the first pic. Didn't get every bit, but the vast majority of it. Next I got some heavy duty semi paste stripper and brushed it on. It took three applications to get all the clear to lift as can be seen in the second pic. A power washer removed it all easily. The third pic shows a wheel after I did a quickie pass with some polishing compound by hand (it was getting really late). There's still some work to be done to complete the project as you can see, but the bulk of it is out of the way.

I've been itching to go out and get started cleaning up those new Eagle Alloys that I bought for the Roadmaster last weekend. They're in really good shape, but they're really filthy. I don't think the previous owner ever touched them with anything other than a car wash brush and/or power washer.

It turned out that I was out of wheel cleaner so made a little mixture of dish soap and engine degreaser. It was only partially effective but I did manage to get most of the road grime off. The backsides of the rims were much worse than the front obviously. They weren't even recognizable as the same alloy. Even after repeated scrubbing the back is still a LONG way from being clean. I decided to jump the queue and give one of them special treatment and started to work polishing it with some Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. I discovered that the rims are covered with tiny little black specs of some sort. They're resistant to pretty much every cleaner that I threw at them although I can scrape them off with my fingernail in most cases.

Despite the temperature being particularly warm for the season today (8C/46F) my hands got pretty cold after a couple of hours and I came in. I took a quick photo of the one that I cleaned and one that hadn't been touched yet. The photo makes it seem like a couple of hours poorly spent but it felt good to be out working on something again.
